Something fun that didn't make it into the paper is the "average number of tweets/user over time". It shows how some themes attract more people who tweets only once, whereas in others users tweet repeatedly. Also, the pandemic lead to behaviour shifts.

We manually summarised the 983 topic clusters into 7 themes to grained fine-grained understanding of the data while providing high-level findings. Unfortunately, this attention to detail and a robust evaluation often is neglected in data-driven research.

It was a fun challenge to adapt BERTopic with openTSNE and a bunch of tricks to fit >13M texts into a single "topic model". The nice benefit is, that you can also "look" at the result when running the analysis in two dimensions.

We see a sustained drop in attention to activist movements and subsequently an increased focus on climate causes and climate solutions. Increased awareness of causes and solutions helped the climate change discourse to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our article "How global crises compete for our attention: Insights from 13.5 million tweets on climate change during COVID-19" is not published in ERSS! https://t.co/emqhY8mW80 We show that the pandemic only temporarily diverted attention away from climate change

I've been wanting to develop this for years. Thanks @MCC_Berlin for allowing me to finally do this and @benmschmidt @nomic_ai @enjalot @flekschas @clured for showing it's possible. We hope to establish review ecosystems around or large-scale literature synthesis projects.

Brilliant visual definition of what is or is not CDR. 1) Captured CO2 must come from the atmosphere, not from fossil sources 2) Storage must be durable, such that CO2 is not soon reintroduced to the atmosphere 3) Removal by human intervention, additional to natural processes

Important statement by many scientists: CDR is not a license to continue using fossil fuels without mitigation or to "turn the clock back"! 60-90% emissions reduction is needed, use CDR only for "hard to abate" emissions; peak shaving in overshoot scenarios is dangerous
❗ Climate scientists please sign ❗ With the participation of CDRterra researchers @FutureEarth & @WCRP_climate have just released a statement from scientists about #FossilFuelPhaseout in relation to recent comments at #COP28: "The Science is Clear: We Need #NetZero Carbon

Calculating GHG budgets and fluxes can be very confusing. Depending on how you do it, there can be significant discrepancies. @mattgidden et al. define the underlying problem(s) and describe how to align different approaches and models.
🚨Our new paper is out in @Nature! 🚨 We assess how key global mitigation benchmarks shift after aligning pathways assessed by the @IPCC_CH to LULUCF accounting conventions used by parties to the #ParisAgreement. Open access and available at:
