Good overview by @CatClifford of clean energy policy in midwestern swing states: MI, PA, WI. MI is a clear leader .WI has lagged, can look to MI.PA a fossil-state producer, limited clean, but 35% RPS proposed . @CipherClimate.

Our conclusion:. “Ammonia synthesis was pushed along by powerful historical forces which are not yet apparent for liquid DAC. If similar developments do not emerge soon, it may be necessary to create them.”. 11/x

It’s not just “can we get to GT-scale DAC” but also “how to do it?”.Implications for DAC from each factor from NH3. 10/x

If high temperature DAC can grow like ammonia synthesis, DAC can meet 2050 targets, (caveats later). 8/x

Nitrogen synthesis grew quickly in the 20th century postwar. That is the growth model DAC needs to adopt in the next 25 years. 7/x

The formative phase of nitrogen started in 1913 in Oppau, Germany, and spread to US quickly. See chart on nitrogen synthesis capacity of various countries prior to 1930 (more countries in paper). 6/x

Main conclusions:.-  NH3 scaled sufficiently for it to be a model for DAC.-  If DAC scales like NH4 did, we can get to >1GT capacity by 2050.-  NH3 driven by national security (munitions) and by food security (fertilizer).-  Near term benefits for issues of public concern. 3/x.

We need 1000x current DAC to be climate relevant. How to get there?.Plenty to learn from previous examples. Best analogue for high-temperature DAC is ammonia synthesis (NH3) in 20th century. 2/x.
