How could you not admire this man and his country.
I addressed the Irish Oireachtas. It is a great honor for me to stand here today – in a country that understands the price of freedom better than many in Europe, better than many in the world, and that shares our belief that every voice counts, every nation matters. Please

This is a seriously audacious proposal, but it might represent the middle-ground solution both sides are looking for.
"If appropriately timed to happen when the war ends, the day that Ukraine is invited to join NATO will also be the most glorious day in Putin’s career. He will be able to proclaim to the Russian people and the world that his invasion was a success, that he has “won.”

This would make you shudder.
It is my understanding Ireland is about to make a motion to the European body governing soccer to ban Israel from playing in European soccer tournaments. Ireland and others would be punishing the Jewish people 80 years after the Holocaust because they choose to fight back

Many of Mamdani's policies are quixotic and ill-thought out, but he is a master communicator and his rise has been meteoric. He's a very likeable guy and I think it's great that NYC has its first Muslim mayor. Not sure how he's going to deliver all he promised though.
Just in: Zohran Mamdani has become New York City’s first Muslim mayor, after the democratic socialist scored a resounding victory beating Andrew Cuomo with the highest voter turnout in decades. https://t.co/rXrT52jEcb

This is just appalling. There has to be a greater international effort to broker a ceasefire. It should be a priority, right up there alongside Ukraine and Gaza.
BREAKING: More than 400 people have been killed at a hospital in Darfur city, Sudan, the World Health Organization reports. The hospital was taken by paramilitary forces, which have been fighting the army since 2023. https://t.co/CMQZNLiRzY 📺 Sky 501 and YouTube

Spot on here from Daniel Mulhall. The only to influence the situation in the Middle East is to continuously engage with the US and other countries within the EU, each of which have considerable political and economic leverage over Israel. Alienating them is not a good idea.
Here’s what I am saying. The report I was debating wants us to abandon what it calls ‘FDI nationalism’ & stop trading with Israel (not just the OT). That would probably mean leaving the EU & opting out of the global economy. We can do all that of course but it would destroy our

We need a radical disruptor to take charge of infrastructure and housing. Someone bold and slightly Trumpian, a little bit like Javier Milei with his chainsaw but a little less extreme. Down with red tape and regulations!

Only way to absolutely secure Irish neutrality would be to leave the EU. It would also require us to effectively disconnect from the global economy. The Irish left mightn't like it - but we're part of the Western world and thus not considered neutral by its adversaries.

Sincere congratulations, Catherine Connolly, on your election as President of Ireland. Thank you, President Michael D. Higgins, for these years of shared work and friendship. France, Ireland’s closest EU neighbour.

Excellent analysis
Ireland has now swung towards populism (both hard left & hard right variety) and away from centrist consensual politics, that ensured we remained a stable democracy at the heart of Europe. Whether the country swings further to far left or far right populism remains open question

By going the other way towards socialism, hate and vitriol. Far-left, far-right, far-anything = bad...

Catherine Connolly was not my choice, but she'll be my president regardless. Congratulations to her. Be fascinating to observe the international reaction to this result, particularly from the UK, France, Germany and of course the US. #Aras25
