With survey data, I show that as the perceived polarization increases, partisans are less likely to have a negative view of the economy under their party’s administration, and those who still hold a negative economic evaluation are less likely to punish their party for it. 3/3

Using county-level data, I show that increasing polarization over time is associated with a decrease in the number of voters who cast a ballot for the opposition or abstain in response to negative economic conditions. The results are robust for the LDV and a time trend. 2/3

What happens to economic voting under high polarization? In this @BJPolS paper, I argue that voters stick with their preferred party as the ideological distance between parties increases, reducing their propensity to hold incumbents accountable for economic outcomes. 1/3.

The ongoing partisan realignment implies that lower turnout can benefit Democrats. We observed this pattern since 2016 and concluded it could affect party identification based on racial identities. 2024 seems to confirm this trend.

Shor’s data suggest that Trump benefited from higher turnout in 2024 as lower-income and less educated voters are now more likely to support right-wing parties in developed democracies such as the US.

Great interview of @davidshor with @ezraklein. From 7’30” to 12’30”, they discuss changes in party alignment that shift the expected partisan effect of turnout on election outcomes.

I first read Manin when I was an undergrad student in Brazil. His work made me want to be a political scientist. The Principles of Representative Government is one of the best books ever written in political science.
