Consolidation and marketing departments will make replicating 1967, uh, challenging. But one reason this has been an exciting movie year is the way in which these three are revelatory and inspirational for young moviegoers. It feels like the beginning of … something.
Marty Supreme/OBAA/Sinners are kinda of like the Bonnie & Clyde/The Graduate/In The Heat of the Night of our era - the first sign of where the mainstream is headed. Avatar 3 is more a celebratory end of an era of VFX driven films by someone who actually knows how to make them

There’s also a quietly cynical generational reading: the Greatest Generation spanks the Silent Generation, which then gives birth to the Boomers (Queens, 1950–a Trump reading is there if you want it). Really layered movie that on the surface is an electric, sports dark-comedy.

America turns Marty Mauser into Marty “Supreme.” a self-absorbed striver whose ambition matters more than anyone or anything around him, even Japan’s postwar rebirth. Casting Chalamet is subversive because we’re projecting a lot of sympathy onto him.

One thing I’m surprised hasn’t come up more in the conversation around Marty Supreme is how deeply it’s about American assimilation and exceptionalism. It plays like an American creation myth disguised as a sports movie.

On Josh Safdie's MARTY SUPREME, for @ringer

Marty Mauser has a greater purpose and will stop at nothing to achieve it. You could say the same for the actor who plays him.

If you care about movies and keeping the theatrical experience alive, it’s hard to understand disliking these Chalamet marketing campaigns. He’s one of the few privileged Hollywood celebrities effectively using their capital to get young audiences into theaters. Iconic shit.

"how anyone could be a jedi...it's so beautiful" josh o'connor gets it. someone should take notes. the way they ruined this, and made it about midicholorians again was such a disappointment. the idea of "to be someone important, you have to come from someone important" sucks.
Josh O’Connor calls THE LAST JEDI “so beautiful.” “The end of that movie - how anyone could be a Jedi... I just remember seeing that movie in the cinemas and I wept of that last image with the boy. It’s just one of the most iconic images in cinema” (Source: @letterboxd)
