Happy to say that David Fincher: Mind Games will be out in October, with design and graphics by the same team that did the Coen and PTA books. There'll be a very cool announcement soon about the foreword; other information and a pre-order link are below.

Trust me: I voted as hard as I could for Paul Rudd in They Came Together (and Carice Van Houten in Black Book) but no cigar.

I don’t think it’s underplayed at all! Nearly every piece on DOLLS -rightly - mentioned that it felt slovenly in whole or part; for some that style suited the material (however intentionally). No question Joel has a strong(er) hand directorially, and you feel his absence….

Okay that’s fine, but an important difference that I feel is underplayed in a lot of film criticism is that one of the Coens’ strengths was their ability to put together strong sequences that were lit well. Drive-Away Dolls indicates that Joel may have had a bigger hand in that.

I say this as somebody who isn’t fully sure HONEY DON’T works on its own terms! But for me those terms are interesting - and if not fully separate, then at least distinct from the ones set by Joel/Ethan.

As somebody who loves the Coens - and love means not saying sorry - I’m still struck by how much the negative reactions to the Ethan/Tricia films hinge on them not working like the brothers’ movies - as opposed to thinking about how they might work differently.

Witty energy and zingy one-liners can’t quite keep Ethan Coen’s neo-noir caper together.
