New paper I worked on with @EgeErdil2.
1/ How does data movement constrain the size of AI training runs? We find that the largest training runs to date may be only ~two orders of magnitude away from fundamental data movement barriers to scaling, which will arrive in ~three years given recent scaling trends.

Blake Lemoine famously claimed LaMDA was conscious, but his βevidenceβ was consistent with roleplay in response to leading questions. It has also been said LLMs cannot be conscious in principle, but on weak grounds. Two new papers offer hints on the question. (See next tweet.)

I often see argument: βWe have two choices: current rate of AI progress and very large risk of doom, or slow things down, greatly reducing risk in exchange for minuscule delay of benefits.β But whether true depends on mechanism of slowdown. Draconian measures might increase risk.
