OK sports fans, there’s a possible appellate version of a Perry Mason moment looming in the immunity case next week, and it would send the case back to Chutkan pronto, Opinion: This surprise argument could derail Trump’s effort to delay the Jan. 6 trial
latimes.com
An amicus brief from the group American Oversight argues persuasively that the former president's immunity claim doesn't qualify for immediate appeal.

Editorial: Cease-fire now. The killing in Gaza must stop
latimes.com
Israel's quest to root out Hamas has inflicted indiscriminate death and destruction on Gaza and Palestinian civilians. Humanitarian pauses are no longer enough.

The @latimesopinion editorial page has multiple editorials this week on the @LASuperiorCourt Pre-Arraignment Release Protocol, which many refer to as $0 bail.
Editorial: Voters said no to ending money bail in 2020. Why is L.A. County doing it anyway? (via @latimesopinion )

So pleased to report that our Mount Sinai-Yale long COVID (MY-LC) paper with @putrinolab & others is now published!! Proud of the hard work of all who contributed. We found biological signatures that can distinguish people with vs. without #longCOVID (1/)

Nature - Individuals with long COVID show marked biological changes in cortisol and immune factors relative to convalescent populations.

Where does decision refusing removal leave Meadows? In a very bad place. He gambled heavily on winning & then getting immunity. Now his ability to cooperate w/ either Jack Smith or Fani Willis is a) of much less value & b) possibly even off the table. He is in a world of hurt.

This version of Bach’s first cello suite was recorded live in the Great Smoky Mountains. I’ve always thought of Suite No. 1 as “Nature at Play,” so it was a dream to play it with the birds, the trees, and the rushing brook. ▶️ https://t.co/AQn2pIuZQM

Fani Willis’s just-filed supplemental brief zeroes in on these lines on inquiry and as much as accuses Meadows of perjury. He’s in the soup. Litman: Trump’s Chief of Staff Mark Meadows seems to think he can avoid prosecution. Here’s how

His bid to remove the Georgia case to federal court appears to be part of a strategy to secure immunity and make Fulton County Dist. Atty. Fani Willis' case go away.

Is today Indictment Thursday? It would make sense of a lot of the data. But remember that once voted out, the indictment will be sealed and go to a judge who will unseal, which depending on when it occurs could be the next day.

@Lawrence reporting the Trump lawyers girding for the indictment to come tomorrow. The one gap in the public knowledge is the apparent lack of a final meeting. But Trump attorneys surely wd know if they’ve decided to pass or if it’s already happened without the public’s awareness

Last week was a busy one, but in true @StrictScrutiny_ fashion, @LeahLitman and I carved out some time to discuss Justice Alito and his @WSJ "op-Ed" in the @latimes.
latimes.com
The conservative who wrote fiery opinions overturning Roe vs. Wade and dissenting on LGBTQ+ rights can't stand criticism for his free fishing trip or anything else.

🧵For context, this is the @latimes column I penned in August of 2022 that according to @TheAtlantic @TimAlberta's deep dive into CNN, had CEO Chris Licht bragging to his friends that he would "destroy" me. Link:

Does the network really think MAGA loyalists will start watching CNN regularly if they have more Trumpers on their shows?

weird to retweet my own tweet! but this is really the key point that most everyone seems to be missing--
OK I've looked at the Rust case more carefully.Under NMex and get crim law, state must prove "criminal negligence," --> "gross deviation from the std of care a reas person wd employ." This case was overcharged. Looking forward to discussing w/ @thelauracoates on @cnn at 11 PM ET.

"History has taught them that when push comes to shove, the Republican “leadership” will always back down & placate the extremists...There’s a reason the official policy of the US government is to not negotiate with terrorists..." I write for the @latimes
latimes.com
Ever since the Republican fringe pushed out the mainstream's choice for the next speaker in 2014, the party's "leaders" have become weak followers. That gave us the Trump era.

I don’t believe that I’ve ever seen a court reject a proposed amicus brief, especially from eminent amici like the Former GOP prosecutors Cannon just refused to hear from. That’s now several bizarre & non-judicial moves, starting w/ her first announcement of intent to grant SM.
