NEWS:
@Amtrak
and
@TexasCentral
are looking to team up on Dallas-to-Houston high speed rail, a project the private Texas Central has struggled to realize.
At 205 mph, the trains would be *55 mph faster* than any train Amtrak has now.
So grateful that a friend directed me to this eye-opening 2014 piece by Randall Balmer in
@politicomag
on “The Real Origins of the Religious Right: They’ll tell you it was abortion. Sorry, the historical record’s clear: It was segregation.”
After 4 years covering
@SecElaineChao
, who never took questions from the press or the public, media-friendly
@PeteButtigieg
will be a whole new ballgame.
There’s never been a
@USDOT
secretary with such an enthusiastic Twitter following, for starters.
Sen.
@Eric_Schmitt
said it was disrespectful for
@SecretaryPete
not to be at this
@SenateCommerce
hearing on the East Palestine derailment and it shows the administration is out of touch with “flyover country.”
The committee confirmed Buttigieg wasn’t invited to this hearing.
.
@SenSchumer
on
@PeteButtigieg
from the floor, ahead of the confirmation vote at noon: “I know that Mr. Buttigieg is committed to working with members from both sides to improve rail and transit, highways and more… I’m excited to call him Secretary Pete by the end of the day.”
.
@SenBrianSchatz
to
@SecretaryPete
:
I try not to be too effusive with praise … but I just have to say, your department, your team – just extraordinary. The way you’ve run this department -- you are one of the best Cabinet secretaries I’ve worked with.
“The Democrats who ran on infrastructure seem to be doing very very well. This is not the night Republicans thought they were going to have.” -
@NicolleDWallace

@MSNBC
This is a big deal:
@SenBrianSchatz
is taking over as chair of the Transportation-HUD Appropriations subcommittee. He’s been a champion of complete streets and transit and a strong advocate for transportation planning that’s not all about cars.
27% involved an adult driver striking a child pedestrian. Where income data existed, 85% involved drivers who lived in a wealthier census tract than the pedestrian.

THIS is what the announcement was about, though, and it’s a BFD.
@RedwoodMat
says this $2B loan will allow it to produce enough new and recycled battery materials for 1m+ electric vehicles a year.
Before 2011,
@senatemajldr
McConnell directed pork to Kentucky via earmarks. Now he pushes federal grants to his political strongholds via

Just came across this fascinating research that’s being presented at
@NASEMTRB
next week: Out of 339 pedestrian crashes 2011-2015 in Milwaukee: 25% involved a driver who lived outside the city and a pedestrian who lived in the city. 10% were the reverse.
The whole story is stunning. The fact that Bob Jones University was still flagrantly whites-only 30 years after Brown v. Board, and that evangelicals launched a whole movement around “religious freedom” to keep it that way, becomes even more shocking by this postscript:
An online petition started by Teslaphiles calling for Tesla critic Missy Cummings to be un-appointed as safety advisory at NHTSA has blown past its goal of 10,000 signatures and is now steaming toward 15,000.
ON ADDRESSING ROADS & BRIDGES BUT NOT CLIMATE CHANGE: “I would compare that to drawing up plans for a new restaurant with no consideration for health safety or cleanliness. Every infrastructure decision is already, inevitably, a climate decision.” -
@SecretaryPete
@SenateApprops
Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo just came to the podium at an event announcing a massive $2B loan for battery recycling.
Following

@SecretaryPete
‘s reflection on his first year of parenthood is astonishingly candid and vulnerable for a public figure. It begins like any parenting blog, takes a turn for the terrifying and after a while reminds you oh yeah he’s a cabinet secretary.
For some time, Chasten and I have wanted to grow our family. We’re overjoyed to share that we’ve become parents! The process isn’t done yet and we’re thankful for the love, support, and respect for our privacy that has been offered to us. We can’t wait to share more soon.

I got bike-jacked a couple weeks ago. A guy with a gun blocked me in the bike lane on my favorite stretch of my commute home. I’m missing a few key seconds so I’m not sure why I hit the ground as hard as I did and sustained the injuries I did. Getting better is a journey.
NEW: All 50 states, plus DC and Puerto Rico, submitted state EV charging plans to

Maybe just require homicide insurance for a gun purchase? Minimum car insurance, which is basically homocide insurance, is required for car ownership.
This wide-ranging conversation between

WOW. One of the first unions to reach a tentative agreement with the railroads – reassuring us that maybe we WEREN’T about to be thrown into an economic/supply chain crisis – just saw its local members vote to REJECT the deal its own leadership agreed to.
This morning
@SecretaryPete
repealed the
@SecElaineChao
-era “rule on rules,”
@USDOT
’s manifestation of the Trump deregulatory agenda.
Buttigieg’s DOT sees regulation as a tool to promote safety and efficiency and address Covid, equity and climate issues.
Chasten and I are beyond thankful for all the kind wishes since first sharing the news that we’re becoming parents. We are delighted to welcome Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg to our family.
I’m honored to serve as Secretary of Transportation and help build the kind of infrastructure that creates jobs, empowers all, and keeps travelers & workers safe.
It’s time to get to work.
Fascinating and very true insight from
@SecretaryPete
at White House ARPA-I forum: “Our concept of where we are — our understanding of modernity — is wrapped up in how we move.”

A
@USDOT
chief hasn’t addressed the Surface Transportation Board for 20 years but
@SecretaryPete
broke that streak today to underscore the urgency of addressing a little-discussed contributor to the much-discussed supply chain crisis: freight rail.
Amazing to compare the restraint police are showing right now to violent MAGA forces, storming the seat of government, with the lethal force police used to defend Macy’s last summer.
Cannot overstate how different it will be as a reporter to cover a media-friendly celebrity as head of

The article ends with this quote from the South Bend public works director, who “harbors no doubts about Buttigieg’s ability to deliver”:
“He’s proven people wrong before that have underestimated him.”

: ”Every plane they deliver to an airline, every plane that goes in the sky needs to be 100% safe. They need to be able to demonstrate that, which means finding and fixing anything related to this issue.”

I tested positive Wednesday.
I have tested positive for COVID-19 and am experiencing mild symptoms. I plan to work remotely while isolating according to CDC guidelines, and look forward to when I can safely return to the office and the road.
This is horrendous. Automatic emergency braking prevented collisions with adult-sized dummies just 40% of the time IN IDEAL CONDITIONS. They hit child-sized dummies 89% of the time at 20 mph and EVERY SINGLE TIME at 30.
Pete Buttigieg’s first Oval Office meeting probably didn’t go as he had imagined it might: wheeled in on a TV, appearing virtually from quarantine after a member of his security detail had tested positive for Covid-19
