Improving health outcomes by helping to make it easier for people to travel in more sustainable ways
Hampshire, England
Joined June 2015
It's official, cheap, healthy travel is popular, even on main roads. The demand is there, we now need to get on and build the safe space that will give millions more the sustainable, affordable travel choice they are showing they want. @activetraveleng @Sport_England @DfTstats

People [in the US] tend to underestimate public support for green policies. even if they, themselves support them.
@carlafrancome Hi @carlafrancome this is termed ‘pluralistic ignorance’ - where people mistakenly think they hold minority views. Applies to 20mph limits and also to US citizen views on climate change https://t.co/ENPRi2epHp Thanks to @Adrian4Davis for introducing me to the term.

And before you ask: yes I *am* being selfish. I want to be able to get on and off trains more easily, without the risk of injury because I choose bring a cycle with me.

And by all sorts of people, I mean everyone who uses wheels: wheelchairs, walkers, pushchairs and cycles. I mean people (and animals) with small legs and feet that struggle with the step. I mean people who use a mobility aid. I mean people who find steps difficult.

I cannot tell you how much a difference it would make to all sorts of people getting on and off trains if this were standard on every train.

Lots of talk about air pollution and it seems a lot of disagreement about why poor air quality is such a big deal. So, what are the health effects of air pollution? (Brace yourself, it's a difficult read but links to research included). 👇🧵

OK, competition time: Where might the UK have spent this £6bn better than subsidising car journeys? https://t.co/1serVtVTI4
In 2022–23, fuel duty rates were frozen in cash terms for the twelfth consecutive year and then cut by a further 5p, leaving it 37% lower than the 2010 rate in real terms. Maintaining these policies for 2023–24 would cost £6 billion.

I was recently zapped by a police speed gun, doing 26mph in a new 20mph stretch of a 30mph road. On the speed awareness course, I learned something: driving at 20 in many urban areas gets you from A to B in roughly the same time as 30. AND it's safer. https://t.co/BBbu8vbka2

The spread of 20mph zones will save lives and cut pollution. And they’re more popular than many think

We are looking for volunteers to work on an exciting project for Springwood. We are upgrading the childrens’ play area and would like to create a community orchard. We need people to upkeep the trees, water plants and collect fruit. Please apply below: https://t.co/3p190AeK4b

And this is why it's important for road users to pay heed to those more vulnerable, and more unpredictable than themselves. This looks funny, but how many cm was this person from something much more serious? @giulio_mattioli

Tuesday saw our volunteers picking litter in the sunshine on #NCN72 from Segedunum to Neptune Road. They collected 23 bags of litter! 🤯 Find out how you could get involved: https://t.co/PFdx0KFxUi

Is this the perfect riposte to all those covered up ULEZ cameras in London?

Blast from the past @bikeitray
Aerial view of central Eastleigh. No firm dating information with this view but I would estimate around 1960. The white Co-op building can be clearly seen centre left, with the Methodist Church above it. The Peter Green store can be seen to its right, next to the railway.

So, measures that encourage cycling are not "not in keeping with the Victorian seafront", but parking your car there is...?
'Save Our Seafront' organised the protest over the layout changes that locals say have turned the town into "Balamory from hell" https://t.co/UA2ibsVkbC

Here is a lovely advert for how inefficient a use of space cars are...by a car company. #totalironybypass
WATCH: The most amazing thing about this remarkable car commercial, is that it didn’t seem to realize, or didn’t care, how effectively it made the point that cars are a HUGE waste of space in cities. Award-winning 2002 ad for Saturn cars. HT @javiermalagon
