🎉Great news! The new paper ‘Palms of the past: can morphometric phytolith analysis inform deep time evolution and palaeoecology of Arecaceae?’ in @annbot by William Brightly and co-authors is now #free for a limited time. (1/8) 👉 https://t.co/rmXaoO7iPu

66 million years ago, an asteroid impact wiped out nearly 75% of life on Earth, including the non-avian dinosaurs. But a new paper finds that flowering plants weathered the cataclysmic close of the Mesozoic surprisingly well🌸☄️ My latest for @NYTScience:

While the extinction affected some flower species, most lineages survived and the catastrophe may have helped them become a dominant form of plant life.

Early break-up of eastern African forests shaped our ape ancestors
newscientist.com
Forests in eastern Africa started turning into grassland 10 million years earlier than previously thought, which may have driven the evolution of upright apes

Wooded grasslands flourished in Africa 21 million years ago – new research forces a rethink of ape evolution https://t.co/u6BafKoYAw via @ConversationUS

Contrary to the idea that apes evolved their upright posture to reach for fruit in the forest canopy, the earliest known ape with this stature, Morotopithecus, lived in more open grassy environments.

Corbin made the most beautiful illustration of Morotopithecus and the vegetation of the early Miocene! He was terrific to work with and his painting really helps bring the landscape to life. #fossilfriday
