🌱 Why does it matter? Understanding bamboo dieback helps us better manage these important plants for: construction, ecosystem services and climate resilience. (8/8). Full article 👉 #PlantScience #Bamboo #Hydraulics #Drought #AoBpapers.

💡 The takeaway:.Bamboo top dieback may result from a combination of:.🔹 Hydraulic limitations at the top.🔹 Seasonal drops in internal pressure. This sheds light on how tall monocots manage (or fail to manage) water stress. (7/8).

Another key factor?.🌡️ Positive pressure inside the culm (a feature unique to some bamboos) dropped from wet to dry seasons. The maximum height this pressure could support dropped too, matching the height of culms after top dieback. (6/8)

This means the top of the bamboo has poorer water supply capacity, making it more vulnerable to drought. Indeed, during dry seasons, the culm top showed:.💧 Lower water potential.🌿 Lower photosynthesis.🌬️ Lower stomatal conductance.💡 Lower photosystem II efficiency (5/8)

They found that water-carrying vessels widened from the tip downward, similar to trees, but this trend stopped near the base, where vessels got narrower again. Most hydraulic resistance was located at the top of the culm. (4/8)

They studied the bamboo’s culm (stem) from base to tip, measuring: vessel size, water transport efficiency, leaf gas exchange, internal water pressure, all throughout the year. (3/8).

Bamboos are tall, tree-like grasses but unlike trees, they don’t have secondary growth (wood). During droughts, their tops often die back. But why? Researchers looked into water transport, internal pressure, and anatomical traits to find out. (2/8)
