Very true about Alex and the crowds. It was always packed when he played but I recall many occasions when the venue was less than half full with other players. They sometimes would ask people to come and sit nearer the front to make it appear fuller than it was.

Newcastle Journal - 31/01/89. Stephen Hendry wins his first Masters and puts his success down to practising 8 hours a day in the run up to the competition. However, crowd attendances were down, which tournament director Nick Hill attributes to the absence of Alex Higgins.

Liverpool Daily Post - 03/02/86. Cliff Thorburn becomes the first three-time winner of the Masters which put him ahead of Steve Davis on the money list for the 85/86 season. However, Davis recovered the by end of the season, winning a total of Β£244K against Thorburn's Β£192K.

I went to both matches but can't recall if I stayed on for the finish of the Charlton match. In all probability I didn't, as the tubes didn't run after around midnight back then.

Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail. 27 Jan 1983. The Conference Centre set year-on-year records for attendance in the early 1980s. Bill Werbeniuk's 5-4 last 16 win over Alex Higgins in 1983 was possibly the record attendance, at 2,876.
