John Higgins into the Masters final. Like contemporaries Ronnie O'Sullivan and Mark Williams, an incredible player.
The last season in which at least one of the three 'triple crown' finals didn't feature one of these players was 1992/93 - their debut campaign.
All time legends.
Bill Werbeniuk would’ve been 74 today. Among the many stories (true or not) about him is that he once had a drinking contest with equally thirsty Scottish pro Eddie Sinclair.
Legend has it Bill won 42 pints to 41 (Eddie passing out) before heading to the bar for a social drink.
Jordan Brown has gone from working in a petrol station three years ago to being 7-7 with Ronnie O'Sullivan in a major final. Amazing achievement regardless of what happens now.
At the German Masters Jimmy White has become the first player in their 60s to reach the last 16 of a ranking event since Eddie Charlton at the 1992 British Open, a tournament won by... Jimmy White! 😎
15 years ago today I did my first commentary for Eurosport. I was originally filling in for someone else but I've been lucky enough to have since seen some great moments first hand and been part of coverage which has helped spread the snooker gospel to 60 countries.
Thanks all.
Stephen Hendry back on tour eight years after retiring. Good on him. There's never been a more dominant force in the game: five world titles in a row, five Masters titles in a row. Once won five ranking titles in a row. Relentless winner. Fascinating to see how he fares.
Nigel Bond has confirmed his retirement from the professional ranks after being relegated from the tour last night after 33 years.
He will remain involved in snooker through coaching and will play in the seniors events.
Best of luck, Nigel. Pure snooker man.
Zhao Xintong was relegated from the tour three years ago and had to go to Q School. Now he’s UK champion and snooker’s new star.
Huge congratulations to him. Unbelievable talent.🏆
It's poor that the BBC website has not written a single word on the Champion of Champions this week.
They may not be broadcasting the event but interest in the sport surely helps their own events. Plus it's news.
Well done to Michael Holt for getting his tour card back. When he dropped off he didn't complain or blame anyone else. He started coaching, set up a YouTube channel and played in amateur events without thinking they were beneath him.
Fully deserved return.
Congrats to Dave Gilbert on winning the Championship League, his first ranking title.
And it’s worth at least £50k as it gets him in the Champion of Champions and World Grand Prix. Good chance for the Players Championship too.
Main thing is, he finally has a trophy 👏🏆
John Higgins produces even by his standards an insanely brilliant clearance to win the first black ball decider at the Crucible for 18 years.
It keeps him in the World Championship and puts him back inside the top 16.
Zhao Xintong (24) v Luca Brecel (26) in the UK Championship final
- 1st UK final between two non-top 16 players
- 2nd UK final between two non-UK players
- will be the fourth non-UK winner of the title
- winner gets in the Masters
Bring it on!
I’m sad Snooker Scene is to close having written for it for 23 years. Times have changed and print media is not the force it once was.
SS never really made any money. Clive did it for the pure love of the sport. 51 years service. As I said to him, he deserves time for himself now
Clive Everton is 86 today. I spoke to him this morning and passed on the best wishes of the many people in the snooker world who have asked after him.
The trophy for the forthcoming British Open is named in his honour. Clive will be watching, as always.
Great news that Eurosport will be broadcasting every day of the UK Championship live, including the first round (last 128). This is the first time this round has been televised. All the big names are in action. Starts Nov 23!
Well done Dominic Dale. His victory over Duane Jones - and Liang Wenbo's suspension - means he is through to the final qualifying round of the World Championship and is all but certain to keep his tour card for a 31st season.
Here we go then, another World Championship. The 25th I have worked on and my 16th commentating for Eurosport. Still love it. Wherever you are watching, enjoy. There's nothing like it.
That’s now 23 matches in a row at the Crucible that Ronnie O’Sullivan has made a century break. 27th year in a row he’s made at least one. Both records.
Si Jiahui is the youngest World Championship semi-finalist for 27 years and the first Crucible debutant to reach the last four for 28 years. Sensational.
Special mention for
@rachelcasey11
who stepped in at the last minute to become host for the Home Nations series on Eurosport and has done a fantastic job all season 👏👏👏
Stuart Bingham has made the 2,000th century in Crucible history.
John Higgins made the 1,000th in 2007, so it took 30 years to make the first 1,000 and just 14 for the next 1,000.
The last day of a strange and difficult season. We started in the strict Covid bubble with no fans, we end with a full house at the Crucible.
Huge thanks to everyone who has kept the wheels spinning all year. An amazing achievement 👏👏👏
Alan McManus has played his last competitive match but still has plenty to contribute to the sport. His knowledge, enthusiasm and integrity will serve snooker well for a long time to come

A word for Hazel Irvine, who 20 years ago this month took over as the BBC's senior snooker presenter.
The ultimate professional and the nicest person.
I asked her once what she would've done had she not been a broadcaster. She said, 'I'd be trying to become one.'
Congratulations to Hossein Vafaei for winning the Shootout in such impressive fashion, especially following a family bereavement. Non-British players make huge sacrifices to pursue their dreams.
Well done to WST as well for staging another vibrant event.
On to Berlin.
Another season done. Memorable moments, shock winners, brilliant play and a historic ending.
Thanks to all those who keep the circuit moving: players, officials, media, backstage crew and all snooker fans.
There was a telling line from Neil Robertson in the recent WST piece on being a pro from Australia:
"You have to go and live in the UK and accept that you might only see your family once a year for the next 20 years or more"
Deserves every success he has had and all still to come
BBC website piece on Willie states "a major title eluded him." No it didn't. The Mercantile Classic absolutely was a major title. The 1st prize then was higher than for the Masters or UK. The BBC's utter obsession with its own 'triple crown' now extends to rewriting history.
The Milkman Cometh 🥛
After 27 years as a professional, Robert Milkins wins his maiden ranking title at the Gibraltar Open.
Fantastically crazy season 😎
So that’s it for snooker in 2020. The fact we’ve had so many great tournaments is down to the players & hard work of so many people backstage, some of whom have been away from their families for many weeks. Huge, sincere thanks to all of them & well done to
@WeAreWST
and partners
Fergal O'Brien's 33-year professional career ends in a 10-8 defeat to Mostafa Dorgham at the World Championship qualifiers, 2 days before the 25th anniversary of his 1999 British Open triumph.
What a great and humble servant of snooker. Fergal will have plenty more to contribute.
There's a quote about running: 'The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.' Snooker said it would come back safely and it did.
@CLSnooker
was a great feat of organisation. Congrats to Luca Brecel and everyone backstage who made it happen.
Very sad news about Doug Mountjoy passing away. Twice UK champion, Masters and Irish Masters champion, world amateur champion, five times Welsh Professional champion and World Championship runner-up.
Won back-to-back ranking titles at the age of 46.
If it is the end of Ken Doherty's professional playing career then snooker owes him a debt of thanks for the way he has conducted himself over the last 30 years and the way he has represented his sport and his country. Still very much involved of course through his media roles.
Tonight Jimmy White starts his 42nd World Championship campaign, equalling the record set by Fred Davis.
Jimmy turns 60 on the last day of the tournament.
The incredible Ronnie O'Sullivan story continues. Equals Hendry's ranking titles record of 36 and goes world no.1 for the first time in 9 years. Amazing sportsman. The Tour Championship also a fantastic addition to the snooker calendar, proving the worth of longer matches.
Another season over. I’ve been very lucky to work on all events on the World Snooker Tour, starting with the Championship League won by… Luca Brecel.
Thanks to everyone, time for sleep.
Big congrats to Jimmy White, someone who has snooker running through his veins. No matter what knocks he’s taken he’s always kept coming back for more. Well done as well to
@WorldSeniors
for a great event 👍🏆
Last day of the World Championship. Whoever wins, what an incredible feat of organisation from
@WeAreWST
and partners to get it on and stage it safely in the face of many unprecedented challenges. The staff work long hours all year with little thanks but have done snooker proud.
Ronnie O'Sullivan's 10-1 victory over Thepchaiya Un Nooh is the fastest match in Crucible history at 108 minutes.
Previous record was 149 minutes (Shaun Murphy's 10-0 win over Luo Honghao last year).
The normally mild-mannered Barry Hawkins not impressed that his match was held up by scoreboard failure, telling the referee: 'It's a joke, every single competition the scoreboards go down. The website is pathetic, the scoring is pathetic.'
The Shootout needs better online promotion. Lots of drama today but just two tweets all night from WST. Loads of good stories that need amplifying. Big chance for lesser known players to get some of the spotlight.
The British Open is returning to the snooker calendar for the first time since 2004. Will be staged from August 16-22. Broadcast details to be announced.
Steve Dawson has made a very good start to his chairmanship of WST.
Best wishes to John Higgins.
It's rotten hearing you've tested positive and being marched from the venue, plus the uncertainty of what the virus will mean for you.
Hope to see him back soon.
Happy birthday to Ray Reardon, 89 today.
Didn’t get to turn professional until he was 35 as the game had no profile but won the first Pot Black in 1969, which paved the way for everything that’s happened since.
The Masters final is one of the great occasions in snooker. The last time Mark Williams was in it YouTube hadn't been invented. 20 years will be the longest gap between any title. He will become the 7th player to win the Masters three times and the oldest champion.
🏴 O'Sullivan: 🔟
🏴 Higgins: 6⃣
An 𝐮𝐧𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 finish to the session as Ronnie O'Sullivan takes an overnight lead against John Higgins.
A special Crucible moment between two greats! 👏
