Ants may have substantial positive or negative effects on pollination, despite a mediocre role as pollinators. When ants are about, pollination is no longer quid pro quo between pollinating insects and flowers. The party crasher must be accounted for.

St Cyrus National Nature Reserve, near Montrose, is a delight in any weather, but yesterday it was looking at its very best. Good to see the pollinator trail attracting interest, with quite a few bumblebees and butterflies on the wing.

Pantaloon bees in Suffolk last week at the beginning (left) and end (right) of a pollen-gathering trip. Impressive and super-impressive methinks.

So much to see beyond pollinators this morning. A lovely walk by the River Tay in which the highlights were a kingfisher 'hovering' over the river, noisy grey wagtails, a family of sleeping swans, dippers bobbing around and a grey heron stalking the shallows. 🐝🦢🦋

Gardens and pollinators are good partners. Wij garden near Ockelbo, north of Gävle, Sweden is a sheer delight and a pollinator oasis amongst trees and lakes. Nordic garden design, a riot of flowers, crops and greenhouses, and of course essential resources like nectar and pollen.

Lovely to see much floral diversity alongside the new Perth Cross-Tay link cycle path. Plenty of bumble bees, and butterflies enjoying the forage, and noisy swallows never too far away either.

Charles Darwin once said "I do not think anything in my scientific life has given me so much satisfaction as making out the meaning of the structure of heterostylous flowers." Find out more in Athayde's latest blog =

It's the Highland 2025 Big Pollinator Count between August 9 and 16. Every observation you provide helps scientists and conservationists understand the health of our pollinator populations, and the effectiveness of our wildflower meadows. More info @

Let's start this week, on the back of the excellent Big Butterfly Count, with a few images from the Swedish island of Grinda. A short sail from Stockholm, it's a popular nature reserve. In the glades and meadows between beautiful forest trails butterflies are aplenty.

The latest FIT Count season is well underway now. When weather is good, enjoy spending 10 minutes counting the insects on flowers - wherever you can find flowers, and as often as you wish, to help monitor #pollinators. Full details

Pollinator Friendly Symington is a partnership between the Community council and SWT. Congratulations to Dave Houf and Lynne Bates in supporting the community to make pollinator-friendly spaces. You've got to love those hedges - what a transformation for pollinators.

Dikes are part and parcel of the Netherlands landscape. Often steep and narrow, some have served their initial purpose and are increasingly being viewed as potential corridors for nature. Our blog looks at a fascinating transformation =

There are some great pollinator-friendly projects going on across Ayrshire these days. Visited several yesterday from Ayr to Symington to Stevenston. This wildlife area was just one of many wonderful meadows simply bursting with life. Well done SWT and local councils. 🐝💮🦋

Florence is a busy city, popular with tourists, yet it is surprisingly easy to escape the crowds and enjoy a little Tuscan nature (and pollinators). The triangle of sites that covers the Boboli Gardens, The Rose Garden, and Baldini Gardens is an oasis of tranquility.
