Geriatrician. Deputy Medical Director NHS Highland. British Geriatrics Society Workforce Vice President Advocate for ageing and health (and sparkly things) 🌟
Joined May 2010
When the BGS's journal Age and Ageing published the Electronic Frailty Index (eFI) in 2016, it was very influential and is used across the NHS to identify frailty within a population. This has now been made even better with the new and improved eFI2! https://t.co/Xjkq8fmMOT

Myth: Sedatives (like benzos) are mostly helpful in calming delirium. Fact: Sedatives often worsen delirium. Non-drug approaches (reorientation, hydration, mobility) are first-line treatments.

Clarity of vision, reliable data and finance/infrastructure incl workforce is needed for this shift to be fully realised. Accountability for the quality of services is a must Critically prioritise this area of health & social care and not as an after thought!
What can be done differently to make the shift towards primary and community care a reality? Our call to action is: 1️⃣ Prioritise, be consistent & clear. 2️⃣ Enable & support local innovation. 3️⃣ Focus on changing national financing, rules & culture. https://t.co/iy0okCwIAn

After debating the amendment tabled by @danny__kruger, we are pleased the Assisted Dying Bill committee voted to remove 'medical condition' from the definition of terminal illness following BGS concerns the term would include frailty. Read our statement:

More worrying evidence about the extent of corridor care from @RCPhysicians - we know that older people are likely to face delays in emergency departments and receive care in these environments. We support calls for data on corridor care to be publicly available.
Our recent snapshot survey found that almost 4 in 5 doctors have been forced to treat patients in unsafe spaces such as corridors, waiting rooms and chairs in patient bays. The survey findings confirm a growing crisis in #NHS hospitals, where a lack of capacity is pushing

This is devastating news for our doctors who have worked and studied so hard! It's important for non medics to remember that these are still qualified, experienced doctors who have the support/supervision of other senior clinicians. This needs resolved asap! #mrcp #workforce

We are very concerned to hear of this major error @MRCPUK which will have a significant impact on affected trainees in the largest specialty, geriatric medicine. We urge those @GeriSoc members to get in touch with us for support.
We are very sorry to announce we have identified that, due to a data processing issue, incorrect examination results were communicated to a group of candidates in the UK and internationally who took the Part 2 Written examination in September 2023.
