Michael wasnโt just a rock solid friend, he was an incredibly generous human to everyone he worked with. He basically invented a genre of science broadcasting: experimenting on himself, talking about his medical problems, being a curious human being not an ivory tower expert. ๐งต

Some personal news. After 14 very happy years, Iโve decided the time is right to move on from a job and city that I love. Iโm here until the end of 2024. More to come on what next for me then. Until then, lots to do. Thank you so much to everyone who has helped and supported me.

Now this is being a true #RamadanAlly. I hope other NHS trusts will follow. This is truly important and shows real thinking and consideration of what is important. Less gimicky and much more valuable than some other Ramadan ally stuff I have seen. Thank you @NHSBartsHealth
For the month of Ramadan, we are extending our visiting hours to 10pm across all of our hospitals โจ This allows people enough time to visit their loved ones following Iftar. These hours will apply to all visitors, starting from Monday 11 March until Wednesday 10 April ๐

Health is bigger than the NHS. Up to 80% of our health is shaped by the social determinants (housing, income, environment). Yet, the focus of this morningโs interview with SoS was services. Understandable but we must create good health as well as treat ill health. #BBCLauraK

About time
Smoking causes multiple harms including stillbirths, lung disease, heart disease, stroke and dementia. A quarter of cancer deaths are caused by smoking. Most smokers regret starting. This will prevent ill health, disability and death. https://t.co/0e8uNUItSd

The key points about vaping (E-cigarettes) can be easily summarised. If you smoke, vaping is much safer; if you donโt smoke, donโt vape; marketing vapes to children is utterly unacceptable. I expand on these points in the article below. https://t.co/S6hrC0Y7BF

Professor Sir Chris Whitty writes for The Times that marketing vapes to children is unacceptable - they should only have a role in helping smokers quit.

Doctors v rarely strike, so things have to be dire for them to do so. Sad they feel they have to. Needs to be resolved well, or risk for a generation a disenchanted medical workforce. Don't blame the doctors. We need them. Value them. Respect & Solidarity. #JuniorDoctorsStrike

Brilliant, much more needs to be done ๐ @KazimB
To tackle health inequalities meaningfully and build long term trust with deprived communities in the UK, the public health workforce must first confront inequities and biases in our own profession, say @KazimB and @kerrylittleford
