Great analysis from @michaelxpettis . I think it’s even easier to understand if you think of that gap as the stealth taxes the Chinese population is forced to pay to fund the country’s loss-leading models that grab international market share from entirely viable Western
These numbers are well-known, but they still shock every time you see them. China's internal imbalances make it such an extreme outlier. This matters to the world because a country's internal imbalances must always be consistent with its external imbalances, and of course its

Best take I’ve read so far.
This was the moment it became clear that Trump was over the target. He told his people to start trash-talking Hamas patron Qatar publicly—a clear threat of an American pullback from Qatar, which would mean the immediate end of the emirate. They got a taste of that five days

A shocking and profoundly depressing piece by @matthewsyed. “..the motivation for being here was obvious, potent and implacable. The hatred of Jews. I heard conspiracy theories (October 7 was a false flag operation), blood libels, and the pervasive view that the Manchester

A timely piece. Thankyou Pat.
We should be pessimistic about the possibility of change, argues @PatPorter76

A summary on the anti-West strategy in play re. Palestine. Can various foreign actors aligned with Islamists/anti-West leftists convince a majority in the West to abandon a Liberal democracy defending itself? Big repercussions if so.
Sort of. The issue with Israel - far more than with, say, Ukraine - is that the rhetorical and political outweigh the military side by a huge margin.

This seems to be the general conclusion wherever I look. To obtain a low carbon energy system with a corresponding low user cost, nuclear has to be significant part of the solution.

If net zero loses its social licence, it will not be because of renewable energy (who doesn’t love that idea, in theory). It will be because successive governments have told economically suicidal lies about the overall cost (& local/global benefits) of it.
Why the biggest threat to net zero is right-wing misinformation. Eagerly clicked on this to find an example or refutation: not a single one. https://t.co/E1EbYNsNFp

CSIRO doing its hard earned reputation lasting damage. They are not apolitical. Do not bring ideology into engineering!
As promised, a critical thread. 🚨 Here's the simplest sufficient proof that any realistic roll-out of integrated renewables will drive prices up. $176/MWh is, in fact, the LOWEST cost that CSIRO's GenCost analysis supports, and it could be much, much more. It's all in the

Solar is a great way to avoid network costs. For now.
I had the pleasure of presenting my thoughts on our electricity system to a group on Sunday afternoon, and during Q&A one of the questions was: how does rooftop solar increase costs. My answer was in two parts. An easy part and a hard part. 1. Easy part. Every rooftop solar

“Skills shortages” is a slogan. Really, politicians don’t want to raise IR’s to the point where demand meets supply, as this would decimate their favourite Ponzi, the housing market. Mortgage (often non-productive) debt would inevitably be partly nationalised.
In the 10 years to December 2024 we've had net overseas migration of almost 2.5 million persons a bit more than the population of Perth and it hasn't fixed our skills shortages. 1/

A thread on why energy policy & costing needs to come under Treasury dept. An unwillingness by partisan participants to release information critical to the future prosperity of the nation can’t be “commercial in confidence” for the convenience of the government of the day.
We now have the official reason that @CSIRO won't reveal the modelling behind GenCost. - CSIRO is a "commercial entity" - The modelling in GenCost was done for CSIRO's "exclusive benefit" - Revealing the model would put CSIRO at a "considerable commercial disadvantage" 1/

Hamas's counterintelligence "Sahm" unit continues to kill, torture, maim & intimidate hundreds of Palestinians every day in Gaza, sharing photos/videos on a Telegram channel that's run out of Belgium! "Pro-Palestine" journalists never report on these daily horrors. I wonder why.
