When I started blogging about science as a graduate student over a decade ago, never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would end up at
@nytimes
. Thrilled to be joining the Well desk as a reporter covering brain health and longevity!
Freelance rant: I'm owed $13k for work I either invoiced for or articles I submitted over a mo ago and am unable to invoice for bc they haven't been published. I've written 11 articles in the last 8 weeks and I've been paid for 1 of them. This is not a sustainable business model.
A little professional news: I'm super excited to be joining
@nytimeswell
for the next few months as a mental health reporter! I'll be filling in for the inimitable
@cdcaron
through January.
Send me all your brainy and touchy-feely scoops dana.smith

After 8 years working as a writer and 4 using a picture from my 30th birthday as a headshot, I decided to splurge and get professional photos taken. I am struck by how different the contracts are for an independent photographer vs an independent journalist. 🧵
How psychedelics alleviate depression is one of the great mysteries in psychology research today. For
@nytopinion
, I dive into the debate of whether the drugs' benefits are from their pharmacological effects on the brain or the trip they take people on.
Fuck this ruling and fuck the talk of coat hangers. In the US in 2022, it is possible to have a safe self-managed abortion using medication. Mifepristone and misoprostol are 95% effective at ending a pregnancy, and they're safer than Tylenol.
@ravenscimaven
I wrote this piece on what to eat when you're depressed back in 2019. There are probably some good ideas for when you're struggling physically too.
My personal favs are hardboiled eggs, turkey-cheese roll-ups, hummus & carrots, and peanut butter pretzels
Just imagine if freelance writers:
Were paid upon commission
Retained copyright for their work
Were paid more money for more labor
Had legal protections should a problem arise
That almost sounds like a sustainable business model.
Sorry to be a buzz-kill, but it's time to admit how bad alcohol is for our health. To minimize your risks for cancer, heart disease and liver disease, keep your drinking within the recommended limits: 1 drink a day for women, 2 for men.
I've got a new piece for
@bustle
this week looking into what's the deal with
@mcuban
's
@costplusdrugs
and whether their prices are too good to be true.
TLDR: the low prices on generic drugs are legit, and the US health insurance industry is the real scam.
Recently back from Portugal - literally everybody there wore a mask indoors. It just wasn’t a big deal. You walk into a shop, you put on a mask. You walk out, you take it off. And none of the below the nose bullshit either. The only ppl we saw not masking were American tourists.
The moral panic about dopamine has bothered me for awhile (probably because I’m a pedantic former addiction researcher). So I wrote about it for
@nytimes
They’re far from perfect, and they’re incredibly late, but the US government finally sending free tests and masks is a good thing. It signifies a mindset shift that the government—not just the individual—shares responsibility for the public’s health and safety. Now do healthcare.
People who are saying ‘too little too late’ re N95s are missing the bigger picture— there is now a fundamental change in the standard of public respiratory protection!
If you think we’ll never need masks again, I’d say that prediction hasn’t worked out too well
I’ve got a feature out this week in
@newscientist
about the biology of fatigue. Turns out all types of fatigue (a hard workout, the flu, ME/CFS) tap into the same circuit in the brain that receives and interprets information about cellular energy levels.
@_Eric_Reinhart
This is fascinating - I had no idea ambien worked that way! Can you link a paper showing this? I’m curious what that means for the cumulative sleep deprivation. Presumably that still takes a toll!
Periodic reminder that abortion care is the same thing as miscarriage care. If a doctor doesn't know how to perform an abortion, they also don't know how to care for you if you have a miscarriage
I’m not trained in D&E because I trained in Texas. This means, statistically, at some point in my career I’m almost certain to have a patient with a life altering outcome because I can only offer her second best options.
At 6 weeks, the embryo is the size of a lentil. At 9 weeks, it’s an olive. There are no eyes or limbs or organs at this stage; it’s a tiny ball of cells. Billboards and signs telling you otherwise are lying.
Very smart piece by
@PoppyNoor
I've got a new story in
@sciam
about cool research from
@rebecca_saxe
on visual development in infants. They scanned 42 babies aged 2-9 mo using fMRI - an incredible feat! - and found an area dedicated to seeing faces is active way earlier than we thought.
After being eradicated from the US nearly 50 years ago, how the hell is polio back? For
@guardian
I look at the perfect storm of of virus mutations and anti-vaccine messaging that led to the current outbreak.
Why is it that when you have the most to do you feel the least able to act? My latest piece for
@nytimes
is on the frustrating phenomenon of "task paralysis." The feeling is rooted in anxiety and stems from the freeze response (of fight, flight or freeze).
Remember the homunculus you learned about in your psychology text book - the "little man" in the brain that represented the sensory cortex? His penis is probably in the wrong place. And don't even get me started on the vagina! My latest for
@sciam
Today I did a personal admin thing I’d been putting off for over a year, and it took me 5 hours and was exactly as painful and annoying as I thought it was going to be. Let this be a lesson to us all.
It's important not to leave a digital trace of accessing medication for an abortion. Use DuckDuckGo instead of Google; Firefox Focus instead of Chrome or Safari; and an encrypted messaging app like Signal instead of texting.
This year I:
Got laid off 👎
Got married 👍
Bought a house 👍
Restarted my freelancing business 👍
Got pregnant 👍
Had a miscarriage 👎
All during the second year of a pandemic 👎
No wonder I am so incredibly tired. But at least the 👍 (slightly) outnumber the 👎
If you take mifepristone & misoprostol and require medical assistance, YOU DO NOT NEED TO TELL A DOCTOR THAT YOU TOOK THEM. Complications from a medication abortion look and are managed the same as complications from a miscarriage. There is no test to detect these medications.
This was a difficult story to write for a number of reasons. For
@sciam
, I wrote about nitrogen hypoxia, also known as nitrogen gas execution, a new and still untested method of capital punishment.
"What if your aborted fetus had grown up to be a scientist, or even the next Darwin?"
Aside from the fact that this scenario could just as easily go the other way (baby Hitler/Stalin/Mao!), it's so revealing that these dudes care more about a hypothetical than a living person.
I go into more detail about exactly what to expect if you take mifepristone and misoprostol in this article for
@bustle
. Many thanks to
@GynAndTonic
and
@DrDGrossman
for their expertise.
You think you're hot shit, riding high from a professional win. And then you unwittingly drink a fly that drowned in your water bottle and reflexively spit water all over your laptop.
Happy Monday, everybody.
For an article: I’m looking to talk to men who’ve recently started therapy. Is it helpful? Not helpful? Surprising? What you expected? And what prompted you to seek help? I want to hear about it!

In my latest for
@nytimes
, I dive into the science of
#microdosing
psychedelics. Researchers are split over whether taking tiny doses of LSD and psilocybin really can change the brain or if the benefits people experience are all a placebo effect.
First off, payment due was upon commission. Not on the day the photos were taken (submission), or when the pictures were delivered (publication), and certainly not 30-60 days after that. Upon commission.
The greater risk is legal. If abortion is restricted in your state,
@WoWabortionpill
@AidAccessUSA
@Plancpills
can help ship mifepristone & misoprostol from outside the country. Local abortion funds can also connect you with clinics in nearby states that offer these services.
If you do find yourself in legal trouble because of a self-managed abortion, there are organizations like
@NAPW
and
@ifwhenhow
that provide legal assistance for people criminalized for an abortion or miscarriage.
Good news: this may be the last RSV season without a vaccine available. I spoke with virologists and pediatricians about what options will be available and why this was so long coming for
@romper
Finally, there were very clear protections in the contract for her physical and legal safety. In short, she wrote the contract, and the contract protects her.
Second, the photographer retained all copyrights for the work. I can use the images of myself however I like, but I do not own them and I cannot sell them. I am both the subject of and client for the work, but I did not create the work, so I do not have copyright over it.
There’s so much wrong and hateful and misogynistic in that opinion, but one thing I can’t get out of my mind is the idea that adoption solves the problem. As if the US didn’t have the highest rate of maternal mortality among industrialized nations.
Third, the scope of work was very clear, including how many photos I would receive and how much time she would spend editing those photos. If I want more photos (words) or more edits (edits) then I have to pay for it.
ERs across the country are totally overwhelmed, but doctors say that doesn't mean you shouldn't come if you need care. If you're having a heart attack, you'll still be seen ASAP. But if you have a broken arm, be prepared to wait. My latest

The Louisiana GOP just advanced a bill out of committee that says life begins at “the moment of fertilization.”
It took 3 days for Republicans to criminalize contraceptives, IVF, and miscarriages.
I'm working with one of my favorite editors again for the first time in over a year, and collaborating with someone who knows me and my writing style - the good and the bad - so well is truly a gift. Long-term writer/editor relationships should be cherished.
1 in 5 rapid tests return a false negative, but that doesn't mean the tests are broken - it means virus levels are too low to detect.
Because of this, FDA now recommends serial testing: If you think you have covid but you're negative, test again in 48 hrs.
A new study out yesterday is the first to suggest an association between uterine cancer and chemical hair straighteners. Using hair straighteners *doubled* the risk of developing uterine cancer by the age of 70.
The day after a big deadline is filed is like the first day of spring. Close all the old tabs! Read all the neglected emails! Wash all the dishes in the sink! The world is full of possibility!
Spending less time on social media and more on books is probably a good idea - but that’s not because cell phones have rewired your brain’s dopamine system. That does happen with drugs like cocaine and amphetamine, but there’s zero evidence for it with everyday rewards.
Ok here's a thing I'll put into the universe: I really enjoy writing explainers, especially about the body, and I think I'm pretty good at them. Can I/should I write a textbook (or a chapter in a book)? And, importantly, does this type of work pay well?
Honest question: Why the rush to lift mask mandates? Why do people hate wearing masks so much? I really don't get it! Who cares if you have to wear a mask in the grocery store or on the subway? It's a minor imposition with a huge benefit - keeping yourself and others safe.
I have a big piece coming out tomorrow that I've been working on for a long time and I am very excited and also very nervous. Please, internet, be kind!
@nytopinion
A cadre of researchers, including
@DEOlsonLab
and
@zenbrainest
, are creating molecules that act like psychedelics in the brain but don't cause hallucinations. If successful, these drugs could replace psychedelic therapy and open the treatment up to millions of people.
My takeaway from the piece is that the State is looking for ways to kill people that appear humane (emphasis on appear), but that's essentially an oxymoron. Killing, by its nature, is almost always a violent and painful act.
For the past month, I've been working on something a little different for me. Instead of reporting on a deadly virus, I've been writing about our deadly climate! (Health and science reporters have all the fun.) I took over
@hothouseclimate
for the month to write about HEAT.
PCOS, endometriosis, miscarriage, infertility, hyperemisis gravidarum, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, postpartum depression, uterine cancer.
So many woman I love (including myself) have dealt with these excruciating, debilitating, sometimes deadly conditions.
There is no data that shows probiotics improve vaginal health. But the lack of data seems almost minor in comparison with calling a vagina a *checks notes* panty hamster.
That feeling when you only have one thing on your to-do list, but it's a really big thing ("write article"), so instead you dick around on twitter all morning
I had fun tracking my glucose for about 5 days until I realized that virtually nothing made me spike above 110 except for a bagel and a bizarre juice drink thing.
Are those mini spikes bad for health? Probably not. Find out more in my latest for

Ok, I know that they're mice/badgers and not dragons, but my brother and I were obsessed with the Redwall series when we were kids. Might scratch the epic fantasy itch.
I just want to give a shoutout to the freelance/writer groups I'm in. They're truly a game-changer in a job that can feel very isolating. Some are old coworkers from a staff job, some stem from workshops, and some are pure internet groups. They're all vital support networks.
✨Personal update✨
I officially became old this weekend: I pulled a back muscle doing yard work.
Related question: what do fellow olds recommend for lower back pain?
If you’re not following
@m_scribe
for covid news, you should be. She is still tirelessly covering the ins and outs of the pandemic, in addition to some of its thorniest issues - long after many other health journalists (myself included) burned out on it.
Is BA.2 going to cause a surge in the U.S. soon? Have we reached the endemic phase — and does endemicity mean viruses are no longer a threat? I tackled these and other questions in my latest:
As someone who is also feeling more rage lately, I really appreciated this gentle, empathetic thread.
Why are we so angry? Because we’ve been really f*cking stressed for 2 years and our brains are at their limits and that makes it harder to be patient and empathetic than others.
1 in 8 Americans is taking an antidepressant, but a few recent review papers have questioned how - and how well - they work. For
@nytimeswell
, I did my own review into the drugs' effectiveness and effects in the brain.
But scientists like
@ExistWell
and
@RCarhartHarris
are skeptical these molecules will provide any therapeutic benefit. To them, the powerful emotional and mystical experiences caused by psychedelics are what lead to people’s therapeutic breakthroughs.
My dinky little stories telling people to get a booster and still wear a mask is a rain drop compared to the tidal wave of the president falsely declaring the pandemic is over.
Psychedelics hold real promise for treating mental illness, and they're very safe from an overdose and addiction standpoint. But that doesn’t mean they are entirely without risk. In my latest for
@nytimeswell
, I wrote about who shouldn't use psychedelics.

This heartbreak is a total condemnation of society: The virus that was allowed to spread, the people who have been denied support, and so on.
Drinking champagne in the bath because it’s Tuesday and life is short so why not. Feeling especially connected to my Granny Betty, whom I’m told also advocated for champagne at any occasion. Although I doubt she considered reading a book on schizophrenia such an occasion…
Most people think antidepressants work by correcting a chemical imbalance in the brain (think of all those "I need serotonin" memes). But the reality is both more complicated and more interesting. My latest for

No one likes talking about end-of-life care, but it's an incredibly important topic. Inspired by the news about Jimmy Carter, I spoke with experts in hospice and palliative care about what hospice entails, who's eligible and how to navigate the process.
@mattyrudes
Well Matt, today they're not, and women still need abortions today and tomorrow and until the next draconian ruling comes down, so hopefully this information could help to someone.
I'm sure political & investigative journalists have felt this way forever, but it's extremely frustrating to cover an important topic - a pandemic that's still killing >300 people a day - and feel like the government is deliberately undermining you/the public's best interest
This is a story about moths and wasps, but lately it's felt like a parable for building a career as a writer (or any kind of creative). Bear with me. Two years ago, my quarantine energy took the form of digging up my front lawn and sowing a prairie. This year, it took off. 1/🧵
NY has declared a state of emergency over the polio outbreak. How the hell did we get here? I break down the perfect storm that caused the current crisis for

Also 93% of the population is vaccinated. And there were trailers providing free rapid tests to Portuguese citizens in major city squares in Lisbon. It was incredible to see what could have been.
This is precisely how I feel. Yes it’s a massive time suck, but it’s also been invaluable for my career as a science journalist. Not because I have a huge platform (I don’t!) but because I’ve gotten a huge number of story ideas and sources here.
I do waste too much time on here but honestly, I will miss Twitter if it melts down! I've met some really cool people on here, gotten great tips and info for stories & life, and shared my work widely & easily

Scientists are finally making progress toward figuring out what goes wrong in chronic fatigue - blood vessels, mitochondria, and the vagus nerve are all targets - and how to fix it. New funding for long covid will hopefully accelerate that effort.
I spoke to over a dozen patients, doctors and researchers about tick-borne diseases like Lyme and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Cases have increased dramatically over the past decade, but getting a diagnosis is still difficult.
I thought I knew how to swim decently well - was on swim team as a kid, did a triathlon a couple years ago. Then I reported this article for
