Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries: “It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use

Have been delighted to adopt Korbessa for a godchild’s Christmas present this year 🐘

Her story began in Korbesa, on the northeastern boundary of Meru National Park. It is a remote area with little infrastructure, ensconced in thick vegetation and anchored by a large well that was...
Every elephant needs a family. This Christmas, invite them into yours. Our adoption programme is entirely digital and delivered within minutes. That means there is still time to give the gift of family to an orphan in need. There's Arthi who's just got his mojo back after

Absolutely nobody asked for this BUT English Anglican cathedrals that have burned down, fallen over, and sank into the swamp: a thread, ranked from least to most dramatic.

Watched this last night. Much the best of the 3 #KnivesOut so far. Beautifully acted by Josh O’Connor, with that rare thing: a thoughtful and positive portrayal of a good priest, taking faith seriously, as well as social satire and a cracking whodunnit https://t.co/TZdQgLnGPo

The Health Secretary KNOWS Starmer's Bill is NOT safe. People will be "compelled to take up an assisted death" because of the state of NHS and palliative care. He is an honest man but the Prime Minister has compelled his and every minister's silence. 🙏Josh Fenton-Glynn MP.

You’ve probably seen this first clip, but have you seen the two in reply? Three key moments when Lord Falconer, the sponsor of the Bill, tells the Lords exactly what MPs have signed this country up for
⚡SHOCKING! Lord Falconer says “pregnancy should not be a bar” to assisted suicide! After Lord Mackinlay (@cmackinlay) tells Peers that Oregon protects viable unborn babies from assisted suicide, Lord Falconer seems completely unmoved & unbothered about this issue.

Members of @UKHouseofLords please listen to this Canadian GP, sharing the realities of #assisteddying in Canada. A healthcare system not dissimilar to our own, but so far we have heard little of their experience. @Tanni_GT @ClareGerada @lucianaberger @JimBethell

"We are absolutely listening to the experts", Kim Leadbeater tells me @GBNEWS. Yet Royal Colleges of Physicians & Psychiatrists, MIND, British Geriatrics Society, Association of Palliative Medicine, Disability Rights UK all say bill is not safe in current form.
'This is the most safeguarded piece of legislation of this type in the world.' Kim Leadbeater MP hits back at claims that she is 'not listening' to the experts who say the current proposed Assisted Dying Bill isn't safe. 📺 Freeview 236, Sky 512, Virgin 604

And another thing!! Do check out the new train timetables. As an @LNER regular it looks like my choices for travel to Leeds and London have been significantly changed and limited. None of my regular train times have survived.
Have recently qualified for a railcard (I know, I know). Delighted to be getting lower fares, but what is this “senior” euphenastyism all about?? Every other age-related card just has the qualifying age range.

What is so infuriating is the brainless way rare opportunity and talent is so squandered. They’ve believed their own publicity. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. #Ashes2025

It is plainly not true that this Bill is the safest in the world. I sat last week with Dutch practitioners and supporters of assisted dying who were, I think, moderately horrified at the exclusion from this Bill of safeguards retained in Dutch law after years of experience.
Assisted dying bill is safer than any other in the world: “I am sure there are many peers who want to scrutinise the bill in a sensible way, but they are being thwarted by a handful who seem intent on stopping law change at any cost.” Dr Jacky Davis

Very difficult to see this as anything other than a thoroughly dishonest way of pursuing a piece of legislation that is of profound importance and, indeed, much more significant than most other bills introduced in this parliament.
EXC - I've seen a leaked policy document from Labour in opposition which sets out how to approach assisted dying. The document sets out how it could be introduced as a private member’s bill, suggesting that would still allow “heavy influence” for the government in the process
