“75% of Universal Credit overpayment debts recorded on DWP’s debt manager system were due to Official Error the DWP had initially miscalculated people’s Universal Credit. “ People need access to justice - independent support to challenge the decision making and help to stay well

The DWP are imposing deductions that push people into destitution, evictions, and poor mental & physical health, according to PLP’s new report. Here’s why we’re calling for reforms that would stop dodgy debt collection and create a fairer system 🧵 https://t.co/b0RgVSq7LI

New report I worked on at @publiclawprojct reveals Universal Credit deductions cause significant harm and are applied in an opaque and arbitrary way. Obtaining information about deductions, accessing hardship measures & seeking legal remedies is often a bureaucratic nightmare.🧵

Important read from @PublicLawProj on how benefit deductions, especially from UC overpayments (often caused by DWP), push claimants deeper into poverty. We’re launching a step-by-step guide next week to help those dealing with UC overpayments without the help of an advice agency

Great to see @feryalclark highlighting the importance of transparency in public sector use of AI at the Labour Party conference - including ensuring compliance with the Government's algorithmic transparency recording standard #Lab24

@tadeyoola @kmei_ @cohere Onto audience Q&A... First, are there use cases for generative AI? @FeryalClark: lots of pilots underway, including in the NHS and other sectors. Doesn't require huge regulation to enable this. Transparency "really important". New standards being published on this for depts 💻

Painful weekend. Having to watch where I go, keep my child close, check on family. None of the violence feeling like a surprise. But today, waking up to work with colleagues @publiclawprojct and with partners, felt like a privilege beyond belief. Our statement.

A new FOI reveals problems with the DWP's digital universal credit system are disproportionately impacting working single mothers. For @BigIssue I spoke to researchers Dr Morgan Currie and @anna_b_dent about the growing concerns around automated welfare.

The way that universal credit claims are assessed by the DWP is under fire, with a lack of transparency over use of algorithms a concern.

NEW: DWP figures show that more than 30,000 people have had their benefits stopped without claiming Universal Credit under 'managed migration'. This is deeply worrying. DWP must urgently investigate why this is & make sure everyone gets the support they are entitled to.
