There's been a lot of talk about the increasingly sclerotic state of bureaucratic institutions. In this post I share seven ways to save bureaucracy from itself. https://t.co/b1MwlByWji

New post just out: A guest post today from @jamestplunkett It looks at why the govt have struggled to reorient Whitehall around their missions - and what they need to do to revitalise the idea and give themselves a defining purpose. (Free to read) https://t.co/4kVEBTrsae

Terrific piece, @jamestplunkett. I appreciated lots here, including the reminder of Elinor Ostrom’s vision for government: build institutions that “bring out the best in people.” What a wonderful purpose for local governments everywhere.

Not really, no. Time for a new push on empiricism.

Just shared a new essay on evidence-based policymaking on BlueSky. Are policies like medicines? An attempt to take stock and think about the next push on empiricism. A long read but it's a complicated topic! https://t.co/4MvswoxTUh

In the new issue of Renewal, @jamestplunkett argues a new ‘how’ of governing is taking shape. It combines missions, relational practices, and internet-era methods to create a new type of state. The online version is free to read:

Popped back here to share a new post but it seems very tumbleweed so I'll just say I've shared the link on Blue Sky and LinkedIn! (....which I admit is annoying but, you know, it's just nicer there and more engagement) https://t.co/cPDlLaNfCh

How do missions differ from traditional approaches to government delivery? One answer is: they work harder to go beyond government, drawing in private sector innovation towards the mission outcome....

Definitely notice in general that 2k followers on Blue Sky leads to more engagement than 14k on Twitter built up over 10 years. Presumably because so many dead accounts, bots, etc.

Experimented with only sharing my latest blog post on Blue Sky. No noticeable drop in engagement vs when I was posting here and on Blue Sky. (Although tbf it wasn't a like for like comparison and n = 1!)

Feels like early Twitter over there. Also interesting that I now get far more engagement there with with 1.5k new followers vs. 14k followers here built up over 10+ years. Guess lots of old accounts here are less active. (2/2)

It's been great to see Blue Sky take off this week. Think tanks, MPs, econonists, policy, digital folk, etc. I wrote a guide here (now updated due to demand) - how to transfer Twitter followers, how to quickly find people of interest, etc. (1/2) https://t.co/HhSiFSTkVJ

(Think we're well past the Blue Sky tipping point for indivduals e.g. in policy-land Diane Coyle, Sam Freedman, Helen Barnard, Hetan Shah, Stephen Bush, Torsten Bell and other MPs, etc, etc. Too many to mention really. Even more so in digital.)

One Blue Sky tipping point we seem to have reached is think tanks joining - IfG, Nuffield, EPI, Bennett Institute, EPI, New Local, Nesta, etc, etc. An interesting moment of power for social media managers. Low risk too - start a parallel account, cross-post, see how it goes.
Updated this due to growing demand as the Twitter exodus gathers pace. Added Starter Packs - themed follower lists to get up and running quickly on Blue Sky. https://t.co/HhSiFSTkVJ
