For example, users with eating disorders were 23% more likely to "like" dieting videos compared to unrelated videos - this is their contribution to their algorithm. But, their algorithms were 335% more likely to send them dieting videos in the first place!.

We also looked at the videos users "liked" - this is important because it tells us what videos users were engaging with. Are users with eating disorders "liking" their way to an algorithm that sends them these videos? Yes, but the devil is in the details.

If you had an eating disorder in our study, your algorithm was 146% more likely to send you physical appearance videos, 335% more likely to send you dieting videos, 142% more likely to send you exercise videos, and 4343% more likely to send you toxic eating disorder videos.

Algorithms belonging to users with eating disorders send proportionally more videos about physical appearance (e.g. #makeuptips), dieting (e.g. #cleaneating), and exercise (e.g. #workout). Their algorithms also send them more toxic, pro-eating disorder videos (e.g. #thinspire).
