5/ Overexpression or deletion of specific small proteins revealed unique growth phenotypes, showing that precise regulation of these proteins is key to maintaining cellular balance during stress.

4/ Interestingly, YoaI showed condition-specific expression, becoming highly abundant under magnesium stress but nearly undetectable under normal conditions. This suggests a highly regulated role in response to environmental changes.

3/ Among our findings, we discovered that a small membrane protein, YoaI, acts as a **connector** between two major signaling networks, PhoR-PhoB and EnvZ-OmpR. This breakthrough advances our understanding of how cells integrate multiple stress response pathways.

2/ Using a combination of ribosome profiling, RNA sequencing, and transcriptional reporter assays, we identified 17 small proteins with increased activity under magnesium stress. Most of these are regulated by the PhoQ-PhoP system, essential for magnesium homeostasis.

1/ In bacteria, small proteins are emerging as key regulators of stress responses. We focused on how these proteins help cells survive magnesium limitation, a major stressor.
