A few new followers recently, so hi I’m Sam. My lab at McMaster works with multi-omics data and computational approaches to understand the etiologies of placental dysfunction. We are also interested in developing non-invasive methods to assess placental and pregnancy health.

Very proud of my students for putting together this comprehensive review on cell-free placental DNA. We found that current reviews focus on clinical utility. Here we focus on basic science or cell-free placental DNA, what we know and current knowledge gaps

We look forward to following this up with some more mechanistic studies!. And of course open to suggestions and critiques to improve this work as it is going through review!.

We found sex-specific differences associated with IVF. Significant changes were observed in male placentas and a shift in DNAm variability was observed in both male and female IVF placentas. We also saw differences in placental cell composition by both sex and IVF.

We performed a meta-analysis on publicly available placental DNA methylation data between IVF and spontaneous pregnancies.

With some studies reporting increased incidence of preeclampsia with IVF (while others do not validate this), we were interested to assess whether we see DNA methylation changes in IVF placentas compared to controls. Secondary whether similar changes were reported in preeclampsia.
