We tried to catalyse agents for change at our #brainhackSouthAfrica, while also fostering locally led innovation in neuroimaging and AI-driven science.

Such an important award and piece to read that highlights the many structural inequalities and racial biases in our current neuroimaging (neurotechnology) methods. These are global challenges, which are particularly pervasive in neuroscience research in Africa.

A special aspect of #SAbrainhack was having @WitsUniversity Visiting Professor @DrSjBrooks from @LJMU there to represent dual perspectives - having lived and worked in neuroscience and neuroimaging in South Africa & the UK. She also rocked the fMRI hacking component!

A defining moment of our #SAbrainhack was @rachaeldangare1 talk speaking to the importance of positionality and subjective experience in the research process, while unpacking systemic inequalities in neuroscience that impact “African” based scientists.

A highlight of our #SAbrainhack was having Benjamin Bessières, PhD there as a representative from @CommsBio, with the @MichelTdS as section lead for the Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience Portfolio. Incredible to have on-site scientific engagement from the journal’s team!
