I am so, so, so happy to announce that the Salt Lake News Guild and The Salt Lake Tribune have ratified the first union contract in the paper's history today. This was the major project of my 2025, working on the Guild's Bargaining Committee. It's been an incredible experience.

THANK YOU to the hardworking teams behind this monumental moment.

Big news on the work front today. I’m excited to have this in place and grateful to the bargaining committee who busted their humps getting it done. Also to management and our board who demonstrated good faith and professionalism throughout. It’s a big deal.

Thank you also to Tribune management. We understand that contract negotiations are often hostile, but ours never were. Throughout this process, management has been willing to work with us to find compromise, and we never once felt like progress had stalled.

Thank you to everyone who voiced their support for our unionization effort. We were able to hit the ground running and a lot of the credit for that momentum goes to you. The community made it clear they stood with us, and that meant more to us than you can know.

We will be meeting with management in the near future to assert our role in representing union members and to ensure they understand their responsibilities going forward.

Union representatives have reminded Tribune management of its obligation to the Salt Lake News Guild and our legal right to be involved in decisions like these.

What is “status quo?” It means management cannot unilaterally change working conditions that are mandatory subjects of bargaining – and that includes terminating employees.

Wednesday afternoon, @sltrib management fired one of our members without first consulting the union, in violation of status quo. We are concerned that management ignored its obligation to involve us and we are working with @NewsGuild to determine next steps.

IT'S VOLUNTARY RECOGNITION MONDAY BABY!!

A week ago today, we announced to @SLTrib management our intent to form a union. 4 days later, they recognized us. Voluntary recognition is rare! We want to acknowledge that and express our gratitude. And now, we look forward to working together to make The Tribune even better.

I’m incredibly proud of the journalists who came together to form this union. I’m grateful to management for recognizing us, and look forward to negotiating a contract that keeps The Tribune — and the work of the reporters employed there — sustainable for years to come.

Never thought I’d see the day. This is a big deal and I can’t thank @laurengustus and the board enough for recognizing the value our excellent staff bring to the paper and welcoming us as full partners in charting The Trib’s future. What an amazing day!
