ICYMI, @ILEPA must revamp its permitting process for polluting industries in residential neighborhoods. It's a HUGE victory, especially for our friends at @SE_TaskForce, @pcrchi, @CEJNetwork, & @LVEJO, who have long fought against environmental racism. https://t.co/CVqUiD5DJu

Grist writes: "The settlement between the @EPA and the @ILEPA includes that the agency enact expansive changes which center community input as well as the history of the company applying for the permit. This is significant, according to @GinaRamirez311." π

βThis is something that should not be taken lightly,β SETF's @oso_campeon said. βBut at the same time, we are also looking forward to seeing how this administration continues to do this type of work to actually improve public health.β

This agreement needs to be celebrated and held accountable because the implementation matters! This was possible by the organizing of those before us and those that gave fuel to @SE_TaskForce @CHIhungerstrike @pcrchi and our siblings from @CEJNetwork. All power to the people!
BREAKING: Gov. Pritzker's administration enters agreement with US EPA to toughen environmental oversight in low-income areas almost four years after giving an OK to scrap-metal operator General Iron.

This agreement stems from a civil rights complaint made by Chicago Southeast Side environmental justice groups in 2020, concerning the decision to move a notorious metal shredder from Lincoln Park to their mostly working-class community of color.
grist.org
The finding stems from a nearly two-year probe into Chicago's support for General Iron's scrapyard on the Southeast Side.

@IEPA's new policy, effective immediately, also requires evaluating applicant histories, addressing disproportionate impacts with stricter requirements, streamlining discrimination grievance processes, and improving public and language access.
