Banaz Mahmod, killed in the name of 'honour', deserved protection but was instead gravely failed by agencies. 'Honour' needs explicit recognition as an aggravating factor in sentencing to prevent women's deaths and to hold perpetrators to account. 1/5

We are appalled at any government moves which place restrictions on our right to protest and freedom of expression, the cornerstone of democracy.

Change requires various levers from freedom of expression, to marches and demonstrations, to lobbying politicians, to preventing weapons of destruction from wreaking havoc and committing genocide because people matter more than property.

We know the many risks we place ourselves in, physically, mentally, economically and reputationally, when we stand up to injustice. Political struggle takes a number of different forms;.

We know and have experienced, at first hand, the many forms of political struggle, usually non-violent, that are pushed into violence by heavy-handed policing.

We were born in the heat of the Southall uprising of 1979 against the deliberately provocative presence of the far-right National Front in our midst and an intensely brutal and discriminatory policing which criminalised many of us who stood up against the NF.

'By and for' organisations, which are rooted in the communities they serve, must be at the table. The most marginalised must not remain an afterthought. This demands targeted legal and policy reform, backed by ring-fenced funding. 5/5.

Reform must be urgent, victim-survivor centred, and shaped with the specialist sector. Without adequate funding and meaningful consultation, change will fail those who need it most. 4/5.

Our frontline experience shows this crisis hits even harder for Black, minoritised, and migrant women and girls. Institutional racism and policies like NRPF create additional, often insurmountable, barriers to safety. 3/5.

A new survey reveals the scale of violence and the deep mistrust many have in public institutions to listen, understand, or act. Reporting is low because confidence in the system is even lower. 2/5.

PM @Keir_Starmer's demonising remarks about migrants, made during the release of the dangerous immigration white paper, were despicable. We urge the government to cease divisive language & urgently reconsider its proposals with a positive, evidence-based approach to immigration.

A rights-based approach to VAWG against migrant women is imperative to ensure that the law does not “turn a blind eye to [their] realities” as urged by GREVIO. Image credits: Council of Europe. 6/6.

We call on the government to commit to reform such as the recognition of ‘honour’ as an aggravating factor in sentencing and to develop statutory guidance in consultation with specialist VAWG organisations including ‘by and fors’ to improve protections for marginalised women. 4/6.

Our experience affirms that this is notably pronounced for Black, minoritised, and migrant women, who encounter additional structural barriers such as institutional racism and NRPF. 2/6.
