Long-term stable motor behaviors are generated by single neuron activity patterns in motor cortex and striatum that are themselves highly stable. New from @KrisTorpJensen @NKadmonHarpaz @AsheshDhawale @SBE_Wolff @BOlveczky @HarvardOEB @harvardbrainsci .

Nevertheless, much is left to figure out about how these behaviors are learned and controlled, but we hope our study will bring us a step closer to understanding the circuit logic by which the mammalian brain acquires new motor skills. 15/.

In summary, our experiments show that cortical and thalamic inputs to the DLS play very different roles in learning and executing the motor skills we train. Our study also addresses the role (or lack of it) of DMS and somatosensory cortex. /14.

Our new results show that the thalamic inputs play a role in generating these new task-specific movement patterns. Additional experiments even suggest that the thalamic input synapses may undergo plasticity during learning and ‘store’ at least part of the learned behaviors. 13/.
