Unofficial account for our former Tenants Ass based in SE15 3AA. We no longer operate a food bank. Not able to rent our hall due to outstanding 🛠

Today I made clear at #SouthwarkTenant conference that c 2008, HM Treasury received more in from council tenants than taken out. We aren't subsidised housing, rather we are subsidising! The council need to change its mindset when dealing w/ its tenants

We don't blame the individual housing officer but the practices and management culture that has been allowed to embed within Southwark and the housing sector as a whole.

Yes there is a shortage in housing, yes we need more council homes but at this point nothing can excuse the willful disregard of your own policy. She would be in a band 1 & helped nom to any of the housing ass we have in the borough with stock elsewhere. Shame on them

We find that the policies in place to 'protect the most vulnerable' are worthless as few can enforce their rights. LAs know this & have been acting with impunity. It took a news crew intervening when there are meant to be whole teams of staff to handle these cases.

Thus is what happens when you allow the dehumanising of groups in society. The criteria changes so those who felt they were immune, find themselves in the trap. When you strip out the system so that only the worse predicaments matter, they gradually chip away at every

The indifference shown by @lb_southwark housing dept who initially left this vulnerable care leaver, fleeing DV on the street until the press got involved, shows how inhumane they are. No attempt to co ordinate w/ other boroughs @CommissionerDA

⚠️Evidence shows that cross-subsidy projects routinely overproduce housing that London has little need for (market homes for sale and rent) and underproduce or reduce truly affordable council houses that Londoners desperately need Read more here 👇 https://t.co/nOkaTTpdhB

Today, PILC launched a report that has found that estate regeneration projects that feature demolition routinely underproduce truly affordable housing for low-income Londoners

Our council leader omits that these new council homes are replacements for those demolished - and were supposed to cross-subsidised by the new private homes. Instead they were built with £193m of council money! https://t.co/A2QE8a8ItH

Southwark forks out £210m for 280 extra social rented homes - £690k each home!!

Huge thank you to academics who are monitoring the shameful impact of gentrification & the erasure of truly affordable council housing. We will not let's these councils forget their hand in damaging our existing communities. @UCLSociology Dr Joe Penny https://t.co/h4KxGD58ye

Regeneration projects in London are routinely underdelivering on homes people can afford and the gentrification is costing people £80 a week.

@Kwajotweneboa @labour F) The link to the building of council homes at current council rents to be made a national government target & performance of housing leaders paid any wage above £100k on this. G) New build homes to be guaranteed for 40 years at a minimum or else this is a waste of funds.

@Kwajotweneboa @labour There is no point in having laws that we can't enforce due to being priced out of the legal system. D) Local housing boards that can investigate disrepair within 24hrs who can fine& prosecute failing landlords. E)Metrics on safety &tenant satisfaction linked to pay 4 CEOs

@Kwajotweneboa @labour We demand the following: A) An independent social housing regulator with authority, the expertise & powers to prosecute. B) Rent cap at current levels until safety standards demonstrably change C) Free legal aid for all social housing tenants to take their landlords to court

@Kwajotweneboa @labour Instead, we see this @labour government rushing to increase our rents to pump more £ back into the hands of developers & landlords whose failures to manage our homes are literally killing us. We are expected to believe these ppl now have our concerns over safety above profit?

@Kwajotweneboa We see the current @labour government holds among its ranks an alleged 'slum landlord' as an MP, 1 of many (past & present) who we are now expected to have our safety as a priority? This egregious conflict of interest shld have been 1st to be removed. https://t.co/6lwITp3v8u
Jas Athwal MP is a landlord with FIFTEEN properties. Complaints about toxic mould were ignored. One of his tenants was threatened with eviction by an estate agent for complaining. Athwal said he doesn't rent to people who receive benefits, which is unlawful. He must resign.

We know that our housing regulations & regulator aren't fit for purpose. You only need to look at @Kwajotweneboa to see the inhumane 'standards' we, as paying tenants, are facing. A lack of money wasn't the issue at #Grenfell it was the greed of contractors & the authorities.

Our thoughts are with the families of #Grenfell who, after 7 yrs, have had to wait for the conclusion we already knew- that commercial interests took priority & those in charge didn't care about social housing tenants. What we need now is action and prosecutions.

Unfortunately #SolomonsPassage is listed as no.1 for example of poorly constructed modern flats. Building the slums of tomorrow, today.

"I was evicted when I was 8 months pregnant." We stand up and defend each other because the system run for private profit fails us every single day. We are fighting for #RentControlNow because it brings us a step closer to a housing system run for human need.
