In the wake of Balin Miller’s death I wanted to repost this advice I found on MP in a thread about his accident. Easily some of the most prescient advice for all of us that go outdoors and especially climbers.

I talked to this guy on Mountain Project, which is the main climbing forum on the internet, after he climbed Reality Bath (WI7) that hadn’t been repeated in 35 years. He was a super nice guy and taken too soon. Complacency comes for everyone. ALWAYS TIE END KNOTS WHEN RAPPELLING!

hey rich people, you shouldn't be spending more than $50,000/yr on top tier health care. Even an all-out at-home clinic like mine is ~$300k. The most powerful health and longevity therapies available to you are no alcohol, finishing eating 4 hrs before bed, screens off 60 min

Finally hurt myself rock climbing, nothing too bad just a pretty bruised heel after a bad landing. Now I just get to perfect my House cosplay and limp everywhere for a couple weeks. Could be worse!

Yeah correct this is the right attitude to have about most things. Plank in your own eye speck in your brother's etc.
There's a certain type of RW guy who holds these two beliefs in a strange tension: 1. You owe it to the world and the next generation to have children and raise them properly 2. No one owes you a damn thing, least of all your own parents, go out and make it work you cur

It's kind of insane that if you have a passport, a couple grand, and any kind of vehicle, you could just wake up one morning and drive this route. Yet very, very few people ever do this. I think I've met maybe 3 people ever who've done anything like it.
