Saturday's No Kings protests were massive, inclusive, and nonviolent. It was an honor to team up with @owasow to analyze how nonviolent resistance can wins hearts, minds, and elections.

I believe the strong form of the status-legitimacy hypothesis was inspired by cognitive dissonance experiments (e.g., the insufficient justification paradigm). Recent replication work suggests a similar pattern (strong, counter-intuitive form of hyp is not reliable, but weaker.

I expect there are real psychological forces that lead people to accept the status quo. I think the mistake here was in claiming system justification is stronger among the disadvantaged.

This hypothesis seems to me more in line with classical claims re: hegemony and false consciousness (Marx, Gramsci, etc.). Unfortunately, this weak version is very hard to falsify, since it requires specifying what amount of opposition/resistance to the status quo is the right.

There remains a weak form of the hypothesis that may be true, roughly: While disadvantaged people oppose the status quo more than advantaged people, they often oppose the status quo less than one would expect given their material and social outcomes.

Glad to see this careful test of System Justification Theory re: the extent to which individuals justify systems that disadvantage them. Bulk of the evidence I've seen consistently contradicts the "status-legitimacy hypothesis"

A new analysis of 24,009 people across 42 countries largely supported the competing claims of social dominance and social identity theories over system justification theory.
