Life hack: met an elderly lady who lives across the street from Six Flags. Says every year she buys a season pass with a meal plan and eats all her meals at the amusement park. In one conversation I figured out what kind of old person I want to be.
This is a small change, but a big move for us. 140 was an arbitrary choice based on the 160 character SMS limit. Proud of how thoughtful the team has been in solving a real problem people have when trying to tweet. And at the same time maintaining our brevity, speed, and essence!
3yo: What’s this we’re listening to?
Me: Bob Dylan
3yo: I don’t like this.
11yo: Yeah, I don’t like the way he plays his harmonica over the music.
Me: He won a Nobel prize for Literature.
11yo: Yeah, makes sense that he didn’t win one for music.
So a few months ago Samaadi tells me he wants to apply to the arts middle school’s creative writing program and I’m like cool. I look at the requirements and I’m like 🤔 that’s pretty high level for some kids.

Hey Vulture Vlad, I’m a professor at University of Maryland, College Park. Please also call my job to complain about me on Monday because I also think your colonizer-like engagement with hip-hop has earned black folks the right to ask you to stay out of these discussions. Peace.
Removed two books from my son’s room and a nightlight as well as the goddamn lightbulb from his lamp so he would go to sleep instead of staying up to read and man, my journey from writer to anti-reading villain has been one hell of a plot twist.
Now you have thousands of white people saying "woke" with a sneer. Meanwhile black people don't even use it anymore. It's in the dustbin next to bling-bling and on fleek and every other word white people ruined.
Ladies and gentlemen, please check out my new story “Shape-ups at Delilah’s” in the latest

!
A female barber becomes the greatest barber the town has ever seen and a bunch of men can’t handle it.
Some good news: The good folks at University of Maryland decided they want to keep me. Starting Jan. 5, I’m a tenure track Assistant Professor of English!!
Pleased to announce the THE WORLD 🌍 DOESN’T REQUIRE YOU WAS won this year’s Towson Prize for Literature. I wrote a Maryland book. Honored my state returned the love.
You have to almost admire what white people did with the word "woke." Because white people frequently misunderstand black vernacular, both unintentionally and maliciously, they changed the meaning of a fairly lighthearted and jokey term.
My mother, Monica Scott, passed last night. I’m going to miss my mother’s smile a lot. The way she always had a joke on you. She always made me laugh. Even when she was battling Parkinson’s she was good for a joke even if she couldn’t get the punchline out as quick as she wanted.
Ladies and gentlemen, the New York Times on THE WORLD 🌍 DOESN’T REQUIRE YOU.

Goodreads is so dumb. Someone wrote a really racist review of an anthology I’m in. Like really super-overtly racist. And then went through and 1-starred every book I’m in, including an anthology of middle school writing I wrote the intro for.
Then he goes home and spends hours creating a cover and uploading his book. And then every time I walk into the room it’s, “did you pre-order my book yet?” And I’m thinking ”🙄OMG it’s like lit Twitter is in my house.”
I've seen my schedule so I guess it's real...
This academic year I'll be joining the faculty of University of Maryland as a Visiting Assistant Professor.
Happy to get back in the classroom. I got books and stories to discuss. Class everyday by the Kermit the Frog statue!
LOL...so the editor that acquired American Dirt, Amy Einhorn, is also the same editor who acquired The Help??? LOL...does that make them part of the same universe?
9yo: My birthday gift to you is that I will behave for the entire weekend.
Umi: Aww that’s so nice...
9yo: And then toward the middle of the week my behavior will get bad again...
My greatest wish in life is that Toni Morrison has secretly been working on a short story collection and she's just waiting for the right moment to release it. Just putting that out in the universe.
Then they attack the term for the meaning that they assigned it. A meaning no one actually uses. It's the ultimate straw man. There is no way to defend against this rhetorical move. The sheer number of white people using this new meaning essentially shifted the meaning of "woke"
Stopped at Samaadi’s school this morning to drop off his computer and I tell the receptionist his name and she says, “Oh! The writer!” 🤣🤣
Anyway, proud of this guy. The Cereal Saga has emerged.
Very suspicious of the review he has on the BN site by someone named “Not Scott” that’s been up since the moment he uploaded the book.
Great Plot!
If you want adventure and a hint of mystery in 19 pages then this is right for you! Short read, but keeps you hooked until the end!
Me: When I’m old you may have to help me.
9yo: And when you’re old you’ll say “I wish I didn’t spend so much time tweeting. I could have written so many more books.”
Me: Just get in the car.
Someone asked me today what's the best type question to ask a writer at a reading. Easiest question ever: "Questions about craft. And the worst type of question to ask a writer of color is one that assumes we have no craft and do everything by accident."
Me: You can’t take that book to school. It’s a library book. I don’t want you losing it.
(7yo leaves the room and when he returns there is a rectangular bulge under his shirt.)
Me: Really?
7yo: What?
Me: 😐
So much of black literature starting with the slave narratives are written for and to white people. Toni Morrison made it clear that she was writing for black people. An ongoing love letter. That’s the perspective a lot of us have now and it’s a Morrisonian innovation.
My father, my brothers and I gave my mother back to the earth yesterday. It was a beautiful send off. This grief doesn’t feel good but it’s the price of being loved and learning to love hard. It’s worth it.
One big error

Walk with me here:
I hate y’all for acting like something’s wrong with ending a text message with a period. Who raised y’all? Got me endings sentences with no punctuation to appease y’all and shit. It’s unnatural. And why the fuck you on my lawn?
Since it is now unethical to take details from real life to make fiction, I regret to inform you that every story I have written or will write in the future is unethical. Sorry.
Yeah y’all we gon’ do it again. New story collection THE WORLD DOESN’T REQUIRE YOU coming summer 2019 from

. Novel also on the way. The Cross River saga continues!
Wife: Don’t give the baby any more ice cream.
Me whispering to the 2yo: Here.
9yo: He’s giving him more ice cream.
Me: Ok, 6ix9ine.
Wife: That was low.
It’s a good thing I don’t believe in discouraging him from pursuing highly unlikely things. They told him they couldn’t stock it (of course) but if he went to the BN site he could upload it for free and people could purchase it. They’ll print it and everything.
What’s interesting about the wave of right wing strong men being elected to lead countries is that they’re all so dumb. Just some incredibly stupid people.
Woo. Just seen Sorry to Bother You. Boots Riley been changing my life since I was 13 and he rhymed “presto/read the communist manifesto.” That was a real wild flick. I would say I can’t wait to see what he does next but I been saying that since 93 and he’s never disappointed me.
Then he shows me all this stuff he’s been writing in class. I was impressed and encouraged him to write more.
So some months later. He has one of his stories all stapled and he’s trying to sell them. We go to Barnes & Noble(s) and he tries to get them to stock his “book.” 🤣🤣
