Los Angeles has been a haven for street food since the first tamale carts arrived in the 1870s, it's also been illegal. This week a law was signed decriminalizing street vendors across CA. Read more about the history and politics of street food in LA. https://t.co/dwmoBRxIKT

It's not unusual to have lighter olive crops every other year, but this season had zero budbreak — the marker of the beginning of growing season.

Turns out, apparently, that options for entertainment were pretty thin on the ground in Devonshire.
In Devonshire at harvest home, men were given a pint of beer with a tallow candle burning in the mug. As each drank, the others chanted, Old Tom Tanner is come to town, Heigh ho! heigh ho! heigh ho! His nose is burnt, his eyes are burnt, His eyebrows burnt also. #FolkloreThursday

Research for the military has often led to food technology breakthroughs. Canning, for example, was invented to supply Napoleon’s troops. Now the US military has pizza that will last 36-months. Fascinating story in the @NYTfood.

The latest entree to join the Army’s roster of M.R.E. field rations is a Sicilian-style slice that stays fresh for years and took decades to develop.

THIS: "When the #lard itself is frozen (try a spherical ice mold to create the “Mangasphere”), it not only acts an ice cube, but it also gives a slight savory flavor—one that pairs extremely well with a good pour of whiskey." h/t @EatTheButterOrg

Congratulations on getting @McDonalds to switch to using trans fat-laden vegetable oils! Of course, trans fats are now banned nationwide (& Canada, just recently!), but the french fries are still not the same as when they were fried in beef #tallow. #BringBackTallowFries!
Today's item for the "But I MEANT Well" folder... Don't know who Phil Sololof was? A cautionary tale. Just 'cause you mean well doesn't mean you're right. Why McDonald's stopped frying potatoes in tallow https://t.co/SXeACRWlN6 He didn't stop there https://t.co/NjvwqDlEFg

Benefits of the Ph.D process? Sometimes you get treated to fish n' chips cooked in #lard! LARD! - Because flavor matters
Just finished an interview with 2 early members of the #Ukrainian #Scout movement (Plast) based in the UK since 1948. As well as giving me this book, CD & badge, they treated me with proper fish n' chips cooked in lard. There are clearly some pluses to the Ph.D process! #phdlife

It was a Santa Barbara guest ranch (Hidden Valley, natch) that made @HVRanch dressing famous. More than famous, really. It's permutations and uses are incalculable. California culinary history is amazing! Right, @CHSoCal? @JuliaMoskin in @NYTfood
