This is the primary reason the Animator Skill Test was recently introduced in Japan. "Jinzai ikusei", human resource development, should be a major priority for the creative industries in particular, seeing as the government is betting on soft power, the core of which is anime.
You know what has actually disappeared? The support structure to train someone to master the craft. This goes for almost all things. Yes, including engineering and design jobs. Everyone wants masters but no one wants to train apprentices.

As a kid this was one of my favourite episodes to rewatch over and over (even in bad quality taped off TV) precisely because of this dynamic action animation. But remember, "Transformers isn't mecha, blah blah, etc."!!.
Anime R's key animators could do amazing things on TV. Seeing those clips from Layzner going around reminds me of their incredible work on Transformers. Some amazing effects stuff in the episode Microbots.

My copy of "Mechademia 2nd Arc, Spring 2022" came in the mail today. I wrote the second chapter; check it out if interested. Also, Eron Rauch's essay is fascinating as always, and Andrea Horbinski has translated an insightful account of proto-otaku by Yonezawa. Thank you to all!

Yes. I wrote about this in a volume of Mechademia, entitled "New Formulations of the Otaku", from Spring 2022. There are many other essays contextualising this particular generation by some fantastic writers, so I recommend checking it out for more insight
Newtypes, isn't just about the people with special abilities in Gundam, but it can be used to talk about how a generation of otaku, who was once considered to be a new type of humanity in Japan in the 70s and 80s, were eventually caught in a cycle of stagnation they can't escape.

I recommend everyone to check out the initial pilot short from a couple of years ago, which is titled "Milky Highway" (I believe it's officially available on YouTube); I'm glad it's expanding into a series!.
