Very sad that the Lamb & Flag has closed. Although Hardy didn’t write any of his novels in Oxford, Arabella in Jude the Obscure (1895, written at his home in Dorchester) works there as a barmaid. ‘“You may remember me as barmaid at the Lamb and Flag formerly?” spoke up Arabella.’

Very sad news that historic Lamb & Flag in #Oxford has closed. It dates from 1566 and was owned by St John's College who used the profits to fund scholarships. Appeared in many episodes of Inspector Morse. Claimed Thomas Hardy wrote Jude the Obscure there. @oxford_beerfest
