New Op-ed! "To truly address gerrymandering and the toxic two-party political culture that has led to its recent resurgence, California needs to fight fire with water. We need structural democracy reform." https://t.co/wwJdKxur9K

Single member congressional districts are at the core of why gerrymandering is even possible. They punish Republican voters in cities, Democratic voters in rural areas, and independent voters across the state. Look into proportional representation if you haven't already.

Newsom's speech last night embodied the problem with the Democratic campaign to "defend democracy." There's no democracy in it. Speech was about stopping Trump, which is essential—but not enough. No democracy agenda. Not a single democracy idea. So here's one: Since CA voters

No single state can end the tit-for-tat gerrymandering cycle on its own. A national shift to #ProportionalRepresentation w/ multi-member would end gerrymandering, allowing voters to choose their leaders – rather than the other way around. https://t.co/D9IfNZ5w9F

The Fair Representation Act would improve redistricting by implementing multi-member districts and ranked choice voting for the U.S. House.

#ProportionalRepresentation is the most elegant way to address gerrymandering in a way that's fair to *everyone*. With it, "the shape of the map no longer determines the outcome." #ProRep also "creates pressure to build coalitions across differences." https://t.co/48QKn9gW0M

“I think what we really need to be looking at is a more proportional system [with] larger, multi-member districts that would take the power away from map-makers and politicians and really put it back in the hands of voters again.” (at 22:37) https://t.co/iQtrntpHzL

Among U.S. adults, 62% feel a third party is needed, but 59% worry that voting third-party helps their least favorite candidate win (per Gallup). How do we fix that? #ProportionalRepresentation. Watch @LeeDrutman explain how in this video with @CBSNews (starting at 1:23).

Dear friends, As Californians debate Proposition 50, one thing is clear: our democracy is still trapped in the gerrymandering wars of a two-party system. Whether you’re voting yes, no, or are still...

I think it’s likely time to get proportional representation back on the table. Allow people to be represented by parties that represent their views and values. The days of monolithic political control are coming to an end. Not congruent with reality anymore.

Imagine a 3-seat district: if a community is about one-third of voters, they can elect at least one of their preferred candidates. That’s how PR turns votes into seats—no map tricks required. #ProportionalRepresentation #FairMaps #ProRep #EndGerrymandering #EndTheDuopoly

PR = fair seats for all voters, not just the majority. In blue California, Republicans and independents deserve a real voice too. With #ProportionalRepresentation, votes translate into seats—no “lesser of two evils,” no shutouts. Learn more here: https://t.co/tlex8Z9dTe

Thanks to our winner-take-all elections, tens of millions of Americans have no voice in Congress. With #ProportionalRepresentation, every voter would have a real voice and we could make Congress work for all of us. Learn more about proportional representation 👇

@eq933 @GreenParty_GCCC @Quintana4CD7 Very few Congressional elections are competitive between the two establishment parties. No alternative party candidate has been elected to Congress since 1970. Fair, inclusive multiparty representation requires proportional representation voting systems. https://t.co/dkzVwg1yME

In our new report, we argue that the winner-take-all system suppresses participation among young people and limits their opportunities to influence policy.

"#ProportionalRepresentation solves the core problem [of gerrymandering]: it makes every vote count. Instead of winner-take-all districts where 49% of voters get zero representation, seats are allocated based on actual vote share." https://t.co/0buo2g7UQg
