Keeping gain of function safe for virologists. Sometimes using data to learn things.

Jeffrey -- Happy 50th -- It's reassuring isn't it, to have lasted so long, across all the years of learning and knowing, adventures and errors, and still to have your childlike curiosity, the drive to make a difference, and the solace of friends. __ Bill Clinton

The modern peer-review is like the Coelacanth: aggressively, luridly ugly, and nigh impossible to believe it’s still around.
"The journal system is on the verge of collapse--not because scientists are abandoning it--but because funders have lost patience with subsidizing a bloated and ineffective publishing apparatus that is...being rendered irrelevant by new technologies." https://t.co/lDDstMb6Dz

I’m old enough to remember when he was the guy saying, actually, no, the figures from deaths in the Iraq war you might find in the Guardian are not super plausible. I yearn for those skeptical, WMD-believing times.

Who cares when a research claim is found to be in error? Peer-reviewed journals do their best to deflect and dilute legitimate criticism. https://t.co/BTFBNaoTQn

I’m looking forward to The Lancet research article coming out next month proving that this guy’s resignation will have killed a million Americans, most of them under the age of 5.

I have a theory that no one's been able to disprove. NIAID is Dick Cheney's horcrux, and since apparently no one can kill NIAID, Dick Cheney will live forever. QED.
@R_H_Ebright @Rebecca21951651 @ProGof39474 @DrJBhattacharya For a few Congresses, Rand Paul and Chip Roy have had a bill to abolish NIAID and create new institutes with term-limited, Senate-confirmed leaders. This is a good idea. Among many other red flags, I smelled trouble when I saw the WH wasn't killing NIAID https://t.co/dDJBEBOfJ6

What do we think of the view that Jay might not know how to run NIAID and needs a native informant like Taubenberger to wind down its worst aspects?
@HansMahncke Hans, from my interactions with him, I have confidence that Dr. Taubenberger is committed to biosafety, strict prohibition of dangerous gain of function work, and a new direction for NIAID. In this case, past associations do not indicate future inclinations.

Anthony Fauci has been pardoned, but surely we could get an excommunication?
The NIH's work advances science and improve health — and it’s clear the world is taking notice. Last week, I met Pope Leo at the Vatican. I gave him an @NIH baseball cap, knowing his love of the @whitesox. He smiled and said he’s an even bigger fan of NIH!
