It is official - as of 19/09/2025 there were 8,374 people being held in Scottish Prisons - a new record! But yet there is a deafening silence from many quarters regarding this - maybe if no one mentions it then no one will notice... This needs some serious solutions to correct it

The last time the population was below 8,000 was on the 2/8/2024 - so it is not as if these numbers have come as a big surprise - early release has partially helped, yes it could be worse, but we need something more radical...

8,354 people are in Scottish prisons as of 12/9/25 - the highest ever since April 2014! 2,032 are on remand - this is a big problem. We need solutions not rhetoric - penal populism is failing...
