“The death penalty is not about public safety. It’s about power. The governor alone decides who lives, who dies with no checks or balances … That’s what we call vengeance and it’s very dangerous,” said Demetrius Minor of @CCATDP @CallTallahassee

Also today, Florida faith leaders gathered in Tallahassee for a press conference before delivering a letter to Governor DeSantis calling for a moratorium on executions.
Mike Bell is scheduled for execution one week from today, on July 15 at 6 pm. And on July 31, the state plans to conduct its record-breaking 9th execution this year by killing Edward 'Zak' Zakrzewski. Learn more and take action to stop these executions.

Florida has executed 8 people in a single year only twice before — in 1984 and 2014. If Mike Bell is killed on July 15, we’ll tie that record. If Edward Zakrzewski is executed on July 31, Florida will set a new record: 9 executions in one year. This is a crisis.
BREAKING: Governor DeSantis signs the ninth death warrant of 2025 and sets an execution date for Edward J. Zakrzewski, II. He is scheduled to be executed on Thursday, July 31 at 6 pm for the 1994 murders of Sylvia, Edward, and Anna Zakrzewski.

@FLDeathPenalty @NicholeManna @TheJaxTrib What Mike’s hearing demonstrated on Monday was that the State of Florida doesn’t actually care about learning the truth. Especially when that truth-seeking process threatens to throw a wrench in their now well-oiled machinery of death.

@FLDeathPenalty @NicholeManna @TheJaxTrib Despite requests from the defense that the witnesses be granted immunity, the State and the Court declined to grant it. The witnesses were threatened with perjury, which carries up to 15 years in prison, if they stuck with their sworn affidavit.

@FLDeathPenalty @NicholeManna @TheJaxTrib However, at Monday’s hearing, these witnesses, clearly nervous and uncomfortable, distanced themselves from their affidavits and exercised their right to remain silent. What changed? @NicholeManna @TheJaxTrib
