Honoured to receive the #Dementia Advocates’ Award. Means so much to me that the importance of our research endeavors are recognised by the community we are trying to help.
The Dementia Advocates' Award recognises the project most likely to be of interest to, or yield important outcomes for, people living with dementia, their families, friends and carers. Thank you @DementiaAus ! Read more

Excited to be awarded the Royce Simmons Foundation Mid-Career Research Fellowship by @DementiaAus to continue my work on #dementia.
Congratulations to Pratishtha Chatterjee for her @DementiaAus mid-career researcher grant and for receiving this year's Dementia Advocates' Award. Dr Chatterjee is working on better ways to diagnose dementia with Lewy bodies, so that patients no longer need to have a spinal tap.

Why many Aβ-positive cognitively unimpaired individuals do not develop downstream tau pathology? Our new study led by @BellaverBruna published in @NatureMedicine shows that looking at reactive astrocytes may help start solving this question.

(6/6) Plasma and serum GFAP carried similar information in ADAD. Cerebrospinal fluid GFAP had a weaker correlation with blood-based GFAP.

(2/6) Higher plasma GFAP levels appeared a decade before expected symptom onset. These higher levels occurred after abnormal beta-amyloid accumulation, but prior to neurodegeneration and cognitive decline.

This needs to be shared and discussed. A ‘gig economy’ is affecting the Australian medical research sector and will have long term effects

(3/4) Aβ, p-tau181, GFAP and NFL were associated with faster future cognitive decline Aβ, p-tau181 and GFAP were associated with faster future Aβ-PET load increase Longitudinally over 36m these blood biomarkers changed at a faster rate in MCI/ AD compared to healthy older adults

(2/4) We found discriminative performance of p-tau181 for AD, for preclinical to dementia stages, was ≥ Aβ/ GFAP/ NFL However, a panel including Aβ, p-tau181 and GFAP had higher discriminative performance for AD, for preclinical to dementia stages, with 85-95% accuracy
