OK, I'm now ~3 years into being a #newPI, and I finally feel like I basically know what the job is and how to do it. One important part was finding an organizational method. Here's what works for me! 🧵 1/

It's so amazing that so many people criticize those who are different - they bully or make fun of them. ...And yet praise outlier results. The people who get to that place are quirky, different, and often not like others in *many* ways. Outlier results = Outlier people

Human beings are born with only 2 innate fears: 1. The fear of falling (heights, etc.) 2. The fear of loud sounds. Any other fear you experience, is likely learned. Good news: Everything learned, can be unlearned...and even many of our innate responses can be overcome.

Thinking about when I: -Had a car fire my 1st day of internship at Johns Hopkins -Unknowingly bought a stolen car with what I had -Couldn't register it (obv) -Covered the sticker area w/a bike rack & drove it through grad school Do what you have to do, to keep moving forward.

Massive growth begins when people start preferring loss to fear. - Loss brings some hits, but you'll learn, calibrate & scale up. - Fear prevents making moves at all. As soon as you can jump the mental hurdle of taking a few hits, you can run harder.

In 2007, I was depressed b/c I had been on the acad job mkt for yrs w/o a job to show for it. My late father said to me: "You're the big pot. You hold a lot of water, so you take a while to boil, but when you do, you will cook everything!" When something doesn't go my way...

Massive time wasters in employees or the self: - Complaining - Comparing - Perfectionism - Fears around failure - Waiting for motivation. Feel free to add to the list. You will fly when you just decide to just drop this stuff and run.

Most people live by "imaginary rules." They believe there are restrictions to: - How much they can make - What they should try for - What rooms they belong in Do not live your life based on imaginary rules.

@doingworkstuff No rant, just the truth. We like to invent easy problems to solve, instead of actually solving the real problems.
