Mr. Trump was emotionally/psychologically unwell when he became president. His condition is clearly worsening. He's becoming more volatile, erratic and unstable. At some point he's going to blow apart. When he does it'll create a crisis. This won't end well. Pray for our country.
President Trump has attacked Gens. Mattis, Kelly, McChrystal and McMaster (LTG), as well as McCain, Vindman and Bill Taylor. What do they have in common/what separates them from Trump? They all served honorably in the military; Mr. Trump did not. They are valorous; he is not.
Pence is distancing himself from Trump on Ukraine. Rush is turning on Fox News. Rudy is throwing the State Department under the bus. And Trump is lashing out in all directions at once. This kind of thing happens when a scandal begins to consume a presidency. It'll get worse.
"The president, enraged for having been unmasked, will become more desperate, more embittered, more unhinged. He knows nothing will be the same. His administration may stagger on, but it will be only a hollow shell. The Trump presidency is over."
Ms. McEnany lied. With a cross hanging around her neck. The Trump era will be known for a lot of terrible things, but the corruption of professing Christians will be rather high on that list. It's a painful thing to have to say.
Kayleigh McEnany on TV just now: “The president never downplayed the virus.”
Donald Trump on tape with Bob Woodward: “I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down because I don't want to cause a panic."
Ok
Watching former Republican senators who were hyper-moralists during the Clinton presidency defend Donald Trump on CNN every chance they can highlights how morality was, for them, simply a weapon to be used against Democrats/Clinton but not Republicans/Trump. Tribalism corrupts.
If you read
@GovMikeHuckabee
's tweets, you'll see a a former Southern Baptist pastor who radiates a spirit of rage, seething resentments, staggering hypocrisy. He's a moralizer who relentlessly defends a deeply immoral president. What harm he's inflicting on the Christian faith.
Trump's obsession with tearing down John McCain is another demonstration of what a genuinely broken soul the president is. His resentment & utter lack of dignity/empathy for the family of a war hero who recently died is but one reminder of the president's disordered personality.
Today was a somewhat unnerving day, watching the notable cognitive decline in the president. His comments are increasingly bewildering, confused, random, disjointed. I’m afraid this isn’t going to end well.
In the showdown with Nancy Pelosi, Trump's been exposed as pitifully weak, all bluster, a pathetic negotiator. Pelosi rolled him in every way. Egged on by right wingers, the whole thing was buffoonish from start to finish. *This* is how Trump's Art of the Deal works in real life.
This kind of cheap demagoguery is low, classless and degrading. It illustrates the ugliness that can result from political tribalism, and it's exactly the kind of thing we don't need. Take it from someone who's been a Republican longer than you: do us all a favor and stop it.
Billy Graham is one of the founders of Christianity Today, which editorialized that Mr. Trump should be removed from office.
@Franklin_Graham
is one of the impeached president's most rabid defenders. Which is just one reason why what CT did was impressive and necessary.
To GOP lawmakers who declare Trump's actions are "rotten to the core": It's better late than never, but his actions have been rotten to the core for four years. It would've been more courageous to speak out when it mattered, not 28 days before Trump leaves office.
George Will, one of the most accomplished and respected conservative columnists America has ever produced, has just dropped a (figurative) nuclear bomb on Donald Trump and his Republican enablers. Read it; and then read it again.
Joe Biden was quoting Mr. Trump's own FBI director,
@megynkelly
. Point: BIDEN. Please don't beclown yourself on behalf of Donald Trump, Megyn. He's not worth it.
He is really, really unwell, Republicans. Psychologically unwell. Emotionally unwell. Dangerously unwell. When will you publicly acknowledge this reality and do something about it? Amor patriae, love if one’s country, requires it.
As I have stated strongly before, and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!). They must, with Europe and others, watch over...
Question: Did the Lord also tell you very clearly to try to overthrow the election, lie on behalf of Mr. Trump and endorse him for president despite his moral depravity? Or were those your ideas?
Mike Johnson told a gathering of Christian nationalists last night that weeks before he became House Speaker, "the Lord told me very clearly" to prepare to become a "Moses" who will lead the nation through a "Red Sea moment."
"Republicans on the committee tried to destroy the credibility of Cohen’s testimony, not because they believe that his testimony is false, but because they fear it is true.” My latest

piece
Ken Starr flamed out as independent counsel. He resigned as president of Baylor amidst allegations he mishandled a sexual assault inquiry. He was a lawyer for Jeffrey Epstein. And these days he sits in judgment of Robert Mueller. Kind of pathetic, really.
"White evangelical Christians are the most consistently reliable supporters of the most polarizing and morally depraved president in American history. It has hurt America, and it has done tremendous damage to the witness of the Christian faith."
You may decide to align with people like
@HawleyMO
, LA's John Kennedy, Jim Jordan, Louie Gohmer, Matt Gaetz, and many of the most prominent figures in the right-wing media ecosystem. Just don't pretend they're conservative or constitutionalist. 1/3
The cognitive and emotional/psychological decline of the president is clearly accelerating. He is breaking apart before our eyes. It is a remarkable thing to witness; and it’s only going to get worse. We’re in uncharted waters.
"The Trump Presidency is Over." It took a good deal longer than it should have, but Americans have now seen the con man behind the curtain. My latest piece in
@TheAtlantic
“'You can boo all you like,' said Romney. 'I’ve been a Republican all of my life. My dad was the governor of Michigan and I was the Republican nominee for president in 2012.'" Large parts of the GOP continues to be seized by madness.
This
@washingtonpost
story is a remarkable piece of journalism. It chronicles Mr. Trump's descent into madness. America is fortunate to have survived this man -- so broken and tortured, so damaged and dangerous, so cruel and detached from reality.
Mr. Trump's recent twitter storm/interviews are more evidence we're watching an American president psychologically, emotionally and cognitively decompose. It's rather alarming to watch, and the president is not well. But at least he's cutting regulations.
We know from the Mueller report that Sarah Huckabee Sanders lied. Now she's lying about her lies. And she's attacking those who are calling her out for her lies. She personifies the Trumpian culture.
FYI
@brithume
: the "smoking gun" tape ensuring Nixon's impeachment was an order by him to have the CIA impede the FBI investigation into Watergate burglaries. The CIA didn't follow through; the FBI investigation continued. RN's request alone was (rightly) deemed corrupt enough.
From WSJ: “Democrats want to impeach Mr. Trump for asking a foreign government to investigate his political rival for corruption, though the probe never happened, and for withholding aid to Ukraine that in the end wasn’t withheld.”
Mr. Trump is so disoriented, so detached from reality, in such a worrisome psychological state that he convinced himself -- if no one else -- the releasing the "60 Minutes" interview, in which he comes across as delicate, as fragile, as a snowflake, makes him look good.
.
@Liz_Cheney
is so morally clear and unafraid. It's why so many Republicans despise her. Because what she says is true; and because it's true, she is an affront to them.
When Liz Cheney warns that a second Trump term could be the end of the republic, all she's doing is asking us to take Trump seriously: “He's told us what he will do. It's very easy to see the steps that he will take.”
"We are witnessing the steady, uninterrupted intellectual and psychological decomposition of an American president. It’s something the Trump White House...doesn’t even try to hide it anymore. There is not even the slightest hint of normalcy."
I reminded a friend just now what he and I have said since the dawn of the Trump era: With him, there is no bottom. If you think what he did with Putin is the low point, just wait. It'll get worse.
I'm not sure Mr. Trump is in a particularly strong position to call anyone a "husband from hell!" Whatever you think of
@gtconway3d
, he didn't pay hush money to a porn star to cover up an affair that occurred shortly after his third wife gave birth to their son. Just a thought.
George Conway, often referred to as Mr. Kellyanne Conway by those who know him, is VERY jealous of his wife’s success & angry that I, with her help, didn’t give him the job he so desperately wanted. I barely know him but just take a look, a stone cold LOSER & husband from hell!
If you want an example of how rancid large parts of the American right have become, watch Michelle Malkin at CPAC raging against the "ghost of John McCain." This display of cruelty and moral sickness brings a standing ovation. What a freak show.
Trump's casual cruelty is a product of his near total lack of empathy and sympathy. This attitude, like others (e.g. pathological lying), eventually radiates throughout/begins to define an administration. And a party. That's how corruption spreads. And it's why character matters.
This is an utterly brilliant takedown of Tucker Carlson by Jon Stewart. It's even better than the first time he destroyed Tucker. Of course this time Stewart has a lot more material to work with.
"Donald Trump doesn’t merely want to criticize his opponents; he takes a depraved delight in inflicting pain on others, even if there’s collateral damage in the process, as is the case with the Klausutis family. There’s something quite sick about it all."
What a gracious/impressive speech by Amy Coney Barrett. You can disagree profoundly and even fiercely with Trump, as I do, while recognizing she's a very impressive person. Don't try to destroy/dehumanize her. Be carefully that in opposing Trump you don't become like him.
Mr. Trump's a bonfire of grievances, resentments, and self-pity. There's no joy or delight in his life; rage and a persecution complex are central to his personality. What a psychologically broken, bitter and deeply unhappy man.
Most of what Mr. Trump says these days is literally made up. He's trying to construct a world of make believe and fairly tales, of myth and fiction, of illusion and hallucination. It's a world increasingly detached from reality. The rest of us must refuse to live within the lie.
Trump’s continued talk of a middle class tax cut right before the midterms, like at tonight’s rally in Texas, apppears to be an acknowledgment that the GOP tax cut is not viewed by enough Americans as particularly helpful to them and perhaps more geared toward wealthier folks.
Once Trump lost power Bill Barr saw the light. I'm glad he has. But recall that Judge Walton (rightly) concluded that Barr put forward such "misleading" and "distorted" accounts of the Mueller report that it called into question his credibility. That matters, too.
@AWeissmann_
Stop what you’re doing and listen to every word that Trump’s former AG Bill Barr utters here.
Remarkable that he is admitting this so plainly. Good for him—and even better for our country.
"Donald Trump is asking us to enter even further into his house of mirrors. He is asking us to live within a lie, to live within his lie, for four more years. The duty of citizenship in America today is to refuse to live within that lie."
The last time Trump upset his base on DACA he weighed in on NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem. This time, he vulgarly attacks immigrants from Haiti/Africa. It's like clockwork; when he seeks to rally his base, he makes racially-charged comments. Such ugliness.
"[McCarthy] has been one of the key figures in transforming the GOP into a monstrous political party, one whose contempt for constitutional and democratic norms poses the greatest threat to the Republic since the Civil War."
Remember when "family values" Republicans/cultural conservatives opposed a Clinton presidency partly because they didn't want to deal with scandals/immoral behavior, intimidation tactics, criminal investigations & sleaze. Now they defend Trump. It turned out to be a cynical joke.
"When the Christian faith is politicized, churches become repositories not of grace but of grievances, places where tribal identities are reinforced, where fears are nurtured, and where aggression and nastiness are sacralized."
This is notable. I served with Judge Walton in the Bush 41 administration. He's a person of integrity; his pronouncements are measured, thoughtful and honest.
Just Now: Seasoned judge, appointed by Republican president, says AG Barr's credibility is in doubt. Walton argues the way Barr spun Mueller investigation appeared "calculated" to help
@realdonaldtrump
and hurts DOJ credibility too.
Today Rush Limbaugh lacerated the left for their "love affair" with "killer, despot tyrants." No mention of Trump's love affair with arguably the world's worst tyrant, Kim Jung Un; or Trump's deep affection for the despot Putin. Such are the complications for Always Trumpers.
It's been pointed out that this weekend a Republican president who paid hush money to hide an affair with a porn star campaigned in a district where the Republican resigned because he asked a woman with whom he had an affair to get an abortion. The party of family values.
To watch Sarah Huckabee Sanders lecture journalists about mistakes while she works for a man who on an almost daily basis spreads falsehoods and seeks to annihilate truth is... a bit much.
This is disgraceful. It tells us so much about Porter, who's credibly accused of abusing his ex-wives; about Kelly, whose defense of Porter is unconscionable; and about the Trump ethos in the White House. They treat women in horrible/dehumanizing ways.
A note to other Republicans: Follow the lead of
@MittRomney
. Speak truth to power. It's the right thing to do. Stop your debasement. You'll do the nation a favor, and you'll feel better about yourselves.
Unprecedented, historic corruption: an American president commutes the sentence of a person convicted by a jury of lying to shield that very president.
I can see why so many evangelicals made a Faustian bargain to ensure Trump defeated Hillary Clinton. After all, if HRC was president today's landmark Supreme Court case would have been a 6-3 loss for them, while under Trump they sustained a....6-3 loss. Was it really worth it?
Obama's birth certificate. Charlottesville. Immigrants from Haiti/Africa are from a s***hole. Calls for a complete Muslim ban. Mexicans are rapists/drug dealers. Judge Curiel rules against him because he's Mexican. It's an ugly pattern that energizes some large part of his base.
"Hear me, Republicans, when I say that many on the American right are growing more and more comfortable with violence as an instrument of politics, as a means to achieve their goals, as a way to defeat their perceived enemies."
This full post by
@Franklin_Graham
comparing the Republicans who voted to impeach Trump to Judas is unhinged. Trump's presidency has served as a CAT scan on white evangelical Christianity in America; much of what's been revealed is sick and sickening.
This is quite sick and quite cruel. Are we now supposed to celebrate the cancer deaths of those with whom we have deep political differences? What an ugly spectacle.
Classy.
@BillMaher
on HBO: “Yesterday David Koch of the zillion air Koch brothers died...of prostate cancer. I guess I’m going to have to re-evaluate my low opinion of prostate cancer.” Audience: laughter. Maher: “Fuck him. The Amazon is burning up. I’m glad he’s dead”

Ms. Sanders is a confirmed liar, including when she admitted to Mueller investigators that she simply made up the claim that "countless" FBI agents had told her that they were thankful Trump had fired James Comey. She said her false statement was made "in the heat of the moment."
The Atlantic story on
@realDonaldTrump
is total BS. I was actually there and one of the people part of the discussion - this never happened. I have sat in the room when our President called family members after their sons were killed in action and it was heart-wrenching...
So
@realDonaldTrump
is attacking Joe Biden as "against God." Biden will "hurt the Bible, hurt God." But there aren't many in the nation less suited to talk about a biblical/Godly ethic than Trump. What an increasingly desperate, pathetic, clownish man.
It looks very much like 2019 will be the year the Trump presidency comes crashing down. A similar fate awaits those who hitched their wagon to him; who have been his sycophants, courtiers and court pastors. The blast radius from the Trump presidency will be enormous.
Maybe if Megan Rapinoe had been found liable for sexual abuse, paid hush money to a porn star, inspired an insurrection, attempted to overthrow an election and sided with Russian over US intelligence, the Trump defender
@Franklin_Graham
would have rooted for the USWNT.
@JoeNBC
The US Women’s National Soccer Team lost to Sweden yesterday at the 2023 Women's World Cup. I used to pull for our women’s soccer team, but recently they have shown disrespect for the US & have used their platform to promote the LGBTQ agenda. When they lost, I wasn’t sad. I wish…

Those of you who supported Trump over the last 7 years-who defended him, who attacked his critics, who looked the other way when it came to his lawlessness and depravity-must be especially proud of these moments. After all, you helped create them.
Here is footage of their pro-insurrection song, sung by the “J6 choir” and cutting out parts of the US anthem to replace with Trump’s own words.
The screen is playing footage of cops being attacked.
Proceeds of the song go to jailed insurrectionists.

I disagree with Pete Buttigieg on policy; he's a progressive and I'm a conservative. But I much admire his temperament and disposition, the way he conducted himself during the campaign, and his mastery of policy/approach to politics. He's got quite a bright future.
Democrat Pete Buttigieg is informing campaign staff that he is dropping out of the White House race, three people with knowledge of the decision tell AP. His campaign says Buttigieg will speak Sunday night in South Bend, Indiana.
"I think Republicans will look back on the deal that they made to get Trump and they will rue the day. I think he is doing generational damage not just to the country, but to the Republican Party and to the conservative cause."
"That’s the significance of what
@CTmagazine
did. They stood up and they said no. That’s not right. We can’t continue with this charade, this moral freak show anymore.”
If you wonder whether the
@CTmagazine
editorial matters, check out the angry/in some cases petty response from the president and his white evangelical Praetorian Guard. The editorial clearly stung, highlighting the hypocrisy that characterizes many in that movement.
Some talk radio hosts this evening are savaging an American hero, James Mattis. It's another example of the poison that's been unleashed on the right. They're now attacking a man who is a legend within the military. Wasn't their narrative that the left hated the military?
Trump lavished praise on Kim, saying "He loves his people...He wants to do right by them and we got along really well." A note to evangelical Christians who support Trump: NK is listed as the world's main persecutor of Christians. No matter; they'll still defend Trump to the end.
Whatever these people were in the past, they're now anti-conservative/a threat to constitutionalism. They're what a friend of mine refers to as "opportunistic populists and personality cultists." These people are reactionaries; they have to varying degrees embraced nihilism. 2/3
Many acted shamefully during the Trump era
@Franklin_Graham
. Republicans who stood up to a lawless president who lit the match that ignited a mob aren't among them. But since we're on the topic there *are* a lot of evangelicals who've acted abhorrently. I even have a few in mind.
Shame, shame on the ten Republicans who joined with
@SpeakerPelosi
& the House Democrats in impeaching President Trump yesterday. After all that he has done for our country, you would turn your back & betray him so quickly? What was done yesterday only further divides our nation.
Romney's a man of great decency/personal integrity. Trump has a mobster's mentality/embodies an anti-Christian ethic. In a clash between them, this shouldn't be a hard choice. Yet much of the GOP base will side w/ Trump, underscoring how serious the right's moral pathologies are.
“The way to beat Trump is not to be like him. The candidates who won did not win as instruments of destruction to Donald Trump. They ran for an alternate vision that was constructive & positive and spoke to the day-to-day concerns of people.”
@davidaxelrod
As one of the earliest "Never Trump" Republicans" (see accompanying link) I take your critique as a badge of honor-not just "human scum" but human scum with an explanation point. I'll do everything I can to prove I'm worthy of your antipathy. Wish me luck.
The Never Trumper Republicans, though on respirators with not many left, are in certain ways worse and more dangerous for our Country than the Do Nothing Democrats. Watch out for them, they are human scum!
Robert Mueller’s interpretation of his report is fundamentally different than what Bill Barr told us. I would suggest that between the two, Americans would be wise to trust the interpretation and integrity of the author of the report.
If you voted to uphold Trump's national emergency declaration, you may be many things -- but you are not a "constitutional conservative." There's no way to spin this one. Silly excuses will only serve to deepen cynicism.
For more than 6 years Trump supporters-M of C, "public intellectuals" and right-wing commentators-stood by Trump. Some were silent; others publicly defended him. Still others attacked his critics. Don't act shocked now. They created this monster; he and they are forever twinned.
Indeed he is. Mitt Romney is an honest and brave Republican voice in an era when Republican lawmakers have been silent and weak. Good for the senator from Utah.
Good luck
@Mike_Pence
. The president to whom you have been servile for four years is now demanding you do what you cannot do, to do what is impossible. And if you fail him, he is likely to tear you apart. "For whatever a man sows, this he will also reap."
If Vice President
@Mike_Pence
comes through for us, we will win the Presidency. Many States want to decertify the mistake they made in certifying incorrect & even fraudulent numbers in a process NOT approved by their State Legislatures (which it must be). Mike can send it back!

This compelling statement by

There's a lot of talk these days on the Christian right about "masculinity." Much of it is warped. So for now just a reminder that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Those are Christian virtues.
Trump's made the same criticism of black athletes, black journalists & black Members of Congress. He attacks their intelligence. His racist appeals aren't even disguised anymore. The closest figure in modern national politics to Trump? George Wallace. Trump now defines the GOP.
In this train wreck of an interview, Sarah Sanders said a lot of silly stuff. One of them is that what sets America "apart from every other country" is that we "value life." Really? No other country values life? We're "unique" in that regard? Nonsense.
Franklin Graham explains opposition to Trump as “almost demonic”, while Mr. Metaxas corrects him on the qualifier “almost”. This is the distorted, theologically deformed and ad hominem world they inhabit and promote; and which is doing so much to harm the Christian witness.
This is my hometown, the place where I was born, raised and fell in love for the first time. At least 28 Chernihiv residents have died in Russian aerial bombing today.
