I was pleased to meet with the new Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson MP earlier today and warmly welcome her desire to work with us to deliver change and a new deal for our members

#Budget24 has once again failed to deliver for pupils and teachers. Our crumbling public services will be this government's toxic & sorry legacy. #Budget.

Teachers are being treated with contempt and unless this situation is addressed, future industrial action cannot be ruled out.

If the Government continues to play fast and loose with the STRB remit, then the pay review body machinery will be defunct, along with any system of check and balance or independent voice in the setting of teachers’ pay.

It feels as though the SoS is resorting to weak excuses in order to continue to delay the commencement of the pay award process for 2024/25. We believe this is connected to the timing of the General Election and plans to impose further real-terms cuts on teachers.

Last week I notified @GillianKeegan we were in dispute over delays in issuing a remit to the STRB for the next teachers' pay award. She has now responded that the timing is being dealt with across Government, leading to the assumption she is no longer in charge of this process.

The inquest has underlined the pressing need for reform of school inspection. In its current form, inspection simply isn’t working in the interests of supporting those working in our schools who are doing their utmost to provide the best opportunities for pupils.

Government could also take immediate steps to address the high-stakes consequences of inspection by immediately ending the system of forced academisation and rebrokering of schools and academies.

The reality is that Government could move immediately by insisting on abandoning the current one word grading system which has had such a damaging impact on the health and welfare of school leaders, teachers and support staff.

Nothing to tackle:.▪️ widening inequality.▪️ the continuing cost of living crisis.▪️ access to affordable housing.▪️ the deepening teacher recruitment and retention crisis. #Kingsspeech.

The immediate and real issues of concern to teachers and families are not being addressed by the Government. #KingsSpeech.

Support and solidarity from NASUWT for our members @StIvoAcademy who are taking further strike action today. Teachers have a right to expect school policies and working conditions that will empower them, not undermine their professionalism.

Teachers need policies that empower them, but our members @StIvoAcademy are being asked to enforce questionable rules that undermine their authority in the classroom. We will always stand up for the right of teachers' professional judgement & autonomy to be respected.
