The official account of NASUWT - The Teachers' Union. #BetterDealForTeachers
Joined March 2010
Teachers did not party in staffrooms, they put their own lives at risk to keep the country learning. This is a disgraceful rewriting of history to distract from the Prime Minister & the Chancellor's lawbreaking. An apology must be issued to the teaching profession immediately.
"I don't think at any time he thought he was breaking the law. he thought just like many teachers and nurses who after a very long shift would go back to the staff room and have a quiet drink". Tory MP Michael Fabricant urges Boris Johnson to apologise.

It is deeply frustrating to hear reports from across the country of surplus vaccines being distributed randomly when teachers are expected to be working in circumstances in which social distancing is a near impossibility #vaccinate2educate.

Our ballot turnout was 42% higher than the turnout to elect the Prime Minister & 7% higher than the average local govt election turnout. But the Govt's anti-trade union laws will block teachers from taking action to win fair pay. We will fight on for a #BetterDealForTeachers.

Data obtained from councils by @NASUWT shows education staff working in both secondary and primary schools are 3-4 times more likely to be infected by #coronavirus than the wider community. We need to ensure education staff are prioritised for vaccination. #vaccinate2educate.

We've called on the Government to reassess the plans for the start of term in light of the increased risks posed by the new variant of the virus.
Meetings going on in Whitehall this afternoon to decide whether govt's plans for new school term from Jan 4th can remain in place in light of the new covid19 strain. @NASUWT now calling for Gavin Williamson to delay resumption 'on-site' learning to assess risks.

The Government has confirmed that schools are not required to deliver mass testing from the start of January. We are advising schools not to spend time during the holidays preparing for testing & that teachers do not volunteer to administer tests.
NEW: Gavin Williamson has sent this letter to headteachers tonight. It contains his response to the unions’ testing statement. He maintains schools are not “driving transmission” of the virus and reiterates his determination to roll out testing but confirms it is “voluntary”.

If today’s reports are correct, the pay review body is recommending a pay award of 6.5% from September - well above the 4.5% average Government offered. Further evidence the Government is out of touch & that its position is not credible or justifiable.
Exclusive: The teacher pay review body has recommended to ministers a 6.5% increase in pay for 2023/24 . That’s significantly higher than the DfE’s offer to the unions and way above the Treasury’s ceiling . Yet another major headache for Rishi Sunak.

Its great to see that our colleagues in the US are being prioritised for the vaccines. Its time for @BorisJohnson to show some leadership and do the same for teachers and school staff here. #vaccinate2Educate.
Today, I am directing every state to prioritize educators for vaccination. We want every educator, school staff member, and child-care worker to receive at least one shot by the end of this month. It’s time to treat in-person learning like the essential service that it is.

It is not reasonable for schools to ask teachers to complete a record/diary of what they are doing on a daily basis if they are working from home. It is reasonable for an employer to set out their expectations of what staff should be doing. These should be reasonable & practical.
Hearing from even more teachers that they are expected to send a detailed summary of their day's distance teaching to senior staff, in addition to the stress of designing and delivering teaching in a format they've never been trained in, at short notice. Seriously. Rethink this.
