Note also that a quarter of first-gen and/or low-income respondents explicitly said that the bias or negative perceptions of others directly affected their career progression.

In our research on socioeconomic background in academia, we ran a survey. Over 2,000 faculty members responded (thanks if you were one!) Social & cultural capital showed up time and again as key issues. A few findings you might be interested in...🧵
Kyra & I used open-ended survey data in our paper on class background in academia. The responses we got, including examples, were crucial for getting a more nuanced understanding of how people felt their socioeconomic background had affected their academic careers.

The Econ Job Market is an emotional rollercoaster. But nothing lifts your mood like realizing your master’s thesis is cited in the Handbook of Labor Economics. 😭 Castro, R., Lange, F., & Poschke, M. (2025). Labor force transitions. Handbook of Labor Economics, 6, 819-881.

I don’t agree with lots in this article, but do agree it’s important to highlight that minimum wages can affect other aspects of job quality. w/ Michael Davies and @rjisungpark, I find higher minimum wages increase workplace injuries, likely via work intensification.
As governments champion a consensus on wage floors, scholars are getting cold feet. A growing body of research suggests that they can degrade jobs, even if they don’t destroy them

In her JMP titled, "How Men and Women Respond to Failure: Evidence from Chess Tournaments," she finds that men react to failure with riskier, less accurate play and are more likely to quit in the short run, while women stay resilient, but no significant difference in the long run

Following my annual tradition: the Nobel puts a spotlight on an idea or field of work that was developed by many scholars. 1-3 people are picked to represent it, but there are another 10-20 people without whose work the Nobel would not have gone to this field. So, without taking

Announced my UCL visit… 2 minutes later a union demo marched past my office. I swear I had nothing to do with it 😂
I am excited to spend this Fall in London at @UCLSocRes. I already had the chance to provide first insights into Captured by Conflict. I love this place! They have a monthly coffee RCT, randomly pairing people up for chats. Worse places to be for a coffee loving experimentalist.
