Green Party councillor for Hotwells & Harbourside ward |
@bristolgreen
Deputy Council Group Leader | Fan of cycling + circular economies | Views my own
In Bristol Central, we don't have to settle for the least-worst option.
Carla Denyer is standing to deliver real change, with an alternative to Tory and Labour austerity policies.
Now is the time to join our movement, and help get Carla elected.

Promoted by Miles Thorpe on behalf of Carla Denyer (Bristol Green Party) both at 17 Great George St, Bristol BS1 5QT
I’m humbled to be elected as councillor for Hotwells & Harbourside. Thank you for showing your faith in me.
I’m so excited to join the biggest & best team of councillors in our city. All 25 of us
@bristolgreen
cllrs will work hard for residents all year round.
Let’s get to it!
An excellent and moving article from
@BylineTimes
on combatting eugenics and discrimination in the modern day, by learning from the past. More important than ever in the pandemic.
I am honoured to be re-elected as councillor for Hotwells & Harbourside with 63% of the vote - a great first result of the day for
@bristolgreen
! 💚
Thank you to everyone who voted for and campaigned with me.
I will continue to represent Hotwells & Harbourside with dedication.
Deeply saddened, angry and ashamed that Bristol's four Labour MPs did not vote to support a
#CeaseFireInGaza
tonight.
Next year when voters go to the polls they will have a chance to elect pro-peace candidates, and I am sure they will.
Now, Shaun does a real good video, but something I'd add is that yes a lot of GCs think that trans issues just didn't exist until 2015 because (insert conspiracy theory here) and the reason for is simple:
The religious right lost on marriage equality and changed tactics.
@HardDriveMag
"Facing heavy criticism, Marvel defended their decision to give The Punisher half of their production budget, despite other titles lacking proper funding."

Caroline had been the best representative the Green Party could possibly have asked for, and we owe her a huge debt for her years of tireless campaigning. It is crucial now that Greens build on that foundation to elect more MPs like Carla to fight for green values in Parliament.
In 2010
#Brighton
Pavilion made history by electing me UK’s 1st Green MP & it’s been the honour of my life. My open letter to residents & friends explains why I’m not standing at next General Election. With love & gratitude, I hope I've done you proud 👇
It is an honour to be the Green Party candidate for Hotwells & Harbourside ward in this crucial by-election. I look forward to working for residents in standing up for our public services and protecting our city from risky developments.
A friend pointed out the link between the government requiring photo ID in order to vote, and government plans to take away people's photo ID for "drug offences" and now I'm kicking myself for not noticing that sooner.
The largest police force in the country is saying it will have a "low" tolerance for "any" protest during what is arguably the largest political event of the year. Not everyone thinks it's a celebration!
This is authoritarianism, plain and simple.
Our tolerance for any disruption, whether through protest or otherwise, will be low.
We will deal robustly with anyone intent on undermining this celebration.
🧵🔽
I'm very proud to see my motion to
@TheGreenParty
conference condemning the authoritarian Policing Bill pass overwhelmingly. Thanks to all the co-proposers!
Greens have led the fight against the Bill so far, and we will continue to do so in Parliament and in the streets.
#GPC22
As a Green, I'm proud to stand up against transphobia. 🏳️⚧️✊
Our party policy and leadership is clear on this issue: we will fight for the rights of trans and nonbinary people, and challenge transphobia wherever it exists.
Sign now to take the pledge:
Thrilled that
@TheGreenParty
pre-conference workshop tonight voted in favour of all
@Greens4HS2
motions and amendments, rejecting the anti-rail motion. This is a great step towards building a modern transport policy and to standing up against our future-wrecking government💚🚄💚
Thank you to all the volunteers who joined me and

I urge
#GPC23
to support motion E05 to fund HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail.
I used to be very against HS2, but we need to work with the reality we live in where it's now half built. The UK needs high speed rail and it doesn't make sense for Greens to say "yes but not that one".
Good morning

Great to hear Carla Denyer
@carla_denyer
on
#Newsnight
tonight.
The Green Party is offering systemic solutions to the
#EnergyCrisis
, unlike Labour or the Tories who will give massive bungs to the energy companies without changing anything.
Deputy Leader of the Green Party Zack Polanski addresses the crowd: “Violence creates more violence and we are here to say, stop the violence! We are proud of our Jewishness, and we are here standing for Israeli and Palestinian freedom”.
Deeply irritated that the question on climate for
#BBCOurNextPM
was asking what 3 things people should do in their own lives to improve things.
ONE OF THESE PEOPLE IS GOING TO RUN THE COUNTRY - why is the BBC framing this systemic crisis as a matter of individuals taking action?
Keir Starmer is in Bristol to roll back Labour's green investment pledge *yet again*.
Bristol deserves politicians who will take the climate emergency seriously and who won't follow the false economy of cuts and austerity
#VoteGreen2024
On the last day before polls open in the Hotwells & Harbourside by-election, I want to thank everyone who has supported my campaign over the past weeks.
If residents put their trust in me, I will deliver committed and effective representation for the area.
Respect for
@OwenJones84
for this very moving and personal column.
Labour has moved far away from its roots - join
@TheGreenParty
to support progressive, redistributive politics.
My family have been Labour for generations.
I joined aged 15.
Now I quit, to back Greens or independents.
Why?
Because Labour is committed to austerity, driving kids into poverty, and war crimes - and destroying anyone who wants an alternative. 👇
Last night, Carla Denyer and I were invited to attend the launch of a new photography exhibition, Notion of Freedom, at Bristol's Palestine Museum & Cultural Centre.
This is a remarkable exhibition and we highly recommend it to everyone who has a chance to go.
Introducing our candidates: since his election last year
@PatDBMcAllister
has been hard at work supporting local residents, community groups and businesses in Hotwells and Harbourside – solving issues and speaking up for our community.

"it’s clear the Green Party is on the ascendancy and voters who previously agreed with their policies but weren’t convinced that they’d get very far in our electoral system are starting to believe that voting with their conscience won’t be a wasted vote."
Welcome aboard, Alex!
I joined the Labour Party as a teenager, have been an adviser, a councillor & a parliamentary candidate.

Absolutely loving this article: "There are no career politicians here. If you vote Green you are voting for someone who is involved because they genuinely want to make the world a better place."
Absolutely fantastic to be out on the doorsteps of Hotwells & Harbourside today with so many incredible volunteers! Thank you to everyone who came down today - looking forward to doing it all again tomorrow!
Very happy that the Council's planning committee has voted to reject the application to tear down
@ZaZaBazaar
to build offices. We did it!
This would have ended a fantastic Bristol business and started years of disruptive environmentally and economically damaging works.
I am opposed to this proposal. I am not convinced by the economic case for uprooting a thriving and iconic business to build office space, and I have concerns about the environmental and heritage impact of full demolition/reconstruction.
“I believe in free speech, but it’s a two-way street. Free speech has to be for ordinary people who care about the climate or race equality and have nowhere to put it except to go out and demonstrate".
Excellent
@BylineTimes
article with Shami Chakrabarti.
Proud to have spoken in support of this. We have an urgent need to decarbonise our entire economy; we cannot do that while domestic travel revolves around air + road. We need high speed rail.
As we so often do,
@YoungGreenParty
is leading
@TheGreenParty
in a modern direction.
🚨 The Young Greens support the full funding of HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail.
💚 We want to enable a modal shift away from cars so that people are able to travel via high speed rail.
Hoping for a swift recovery for Danica; this is an awful injury and incredibly unlucky.
A good reminder to all campaigners to use an implement like a spatula or wooden spoon to post your leaflets. I had to retire my first spatula because a dog took a bite from it.
Update- still at hospital. Sadly my finger can’t be reattached but it’s just the tip above the first joint that’s gone. Just got X-rays to see how the bone is and will be getting antibiotics and probably surgery soon
It was a privilege to be asked to speak at the
#SchoolStrikeForPalestine
yesterday. The killing of civilians must end to enable a lasting peace.
I was so impressed with the energy and eloquence of the youth activists: young people are the future and say
#CeasefireNowInGaza
!
Fantastic day out with
@NSomersetGreen
to elect the fantastic Jenna Ho Marris as councillor.
There was a huge amount of support for Jenna on the doorstep because people know that she is the candidate to get things done and be a strong voice for Pill, Ham Green & Abbots Leigh.
Great turnout at today's March for Palestine in Bristol, including some excellent
@bristolgreen
councillors (and an honorary mention for Cllr Zoe Goodman!).
I truly hope that we don't have to keep marching. The UK must call for an immediate ceasefire + a just & lasting peace.
Continuing the action weekend in Ashford today - supporting the incredible
@YoungGreenParty
candidates Al and Thom!
Greens can and are winning up and down the country and it's so exciting to see the progress
@AshfordGreens
are making.
#GetGreensElected
Bristol's Central Library no longer being under threat is extremely welcome news. But this fits into a Labour pattern of threatening a community resource and then "saving it" from themselves. It just so happens that this often happens around elections as well 🤔
Thank you to everyone who came out doorknocking in Hotwells & Harbourside this evening!
The rain couldn't dampen our spirits against the amazing reception we got and the promise of a warm sit-down afterwards. This May, let's turn Bristol Green! 💚
I'm thrilled that the brilliant
@James_CrBS7
has been elected as the new
@bristolgreen
councillor for Bishopston & Ashley Down. I know that he will continue his incredible hard work alongside
@bristol_pip
and be a fantastic addition to the Council chamber.
Congratulations to
@TonyDDyer
- the first ever Green leader of a UK core city! You and
@HeatherMack4
will do us proud.
Every party has important positions in Bristol's new committee system, and we look forward to working collaboratively to tackle the problems facing our city.
🆕 Agreement on working collaboratively:

I'm so proud to be the new Activist Training & Political Education Officer for
@YoungGreenParty
; I can’t wait to get started with boosting our membership’s skills + empowering young people in elections.
Thank you to everyone who gave me their support for this role.
It was a pleasure for
@carla_denyer
and myself to speak with those affected by the grossly unfair leasehold system in Hotwells & Harbourside. We discussed unequal legal agreements, opaque insurance provisions, and fire safety amidst the cladding crisis.
🏘️ "People could come together and choose their own management company, set their own service charges and take control of decisions around where they live."

on our plan to democratise private sector housing by abolishing leaseholds 👇
I had a great day out campaigning for
@lornajane2
today with
@camdengp
. We had a fantastic reception on the doorstep and I know that Lorna will be a fantastic representative for Highgate. Looking forward to coming back!
First they ignore you.
Then they laugh at you.
Then they fight you.
Then you win.
There has been a definite shift in the media coverage of the Green Party in the last several months. We're in the fighting stage now 💪
So good that at least one of the UK's political parties has leaders who speak sense on this awful conflict
The only way forwards that does not continue the slaughter of innocent Israelis and Palestinians is a ceasefire, followed by meaningful negotiations for a lasting peace.
"The only way we can stop the unacceptable harms to civilians on both sides is to have a ceasefire now..."
@carla_denyer
speaks to the BBC about the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Fantastic to see so many
@bristolgreen
members supporting striking nurses today, including
@TheGreenParty
co-leader Carla Denyer. Greens will always stand in solidarity with workers - it's a shame that other parties who also should are not.

US politicians are now calling the British Labour Party's policies "Reaganesque", in case you're still holding out hope that Keir Starmer will magically transform into a progressive upon taking office.
Senate Dems wake-up and take a cue fr British Labor Party. Read Shadow Chancellor of Exchequer Reeves interview in Telegraph No tax increases and no wealth tax. She is for wealth creation She feels u don’t tax ur way out economic prob. U grow ur way out. VERY REAGANESQUE
Another great evening speaking to residents on Spike Island tonight! Lots of support for the Green Party 💚
A lot of people have concerns over the island's infrastructure. I'll continue to work on seeking answers and improvements for residents.
A great evening out on the doors tonight - we got so many posters out! Thanks to everyone who came along 💚
We are campaigning for the May elections multiple times a week - let me know if you'd like to join in!
It is disappointing that after all the Chocolate Path delays, access to and from the Vauxhall Bridge has *still* not been restored. Why is this gate still here and why is it locked?
This is a safety issue as well as an access one: people will be tempted to climb around it.
Brilliant to see this from
@LonGreenParty

With the wrecking amendment defeated, will those who supported it kindly get with the program or get out of our party?
Despite the outcome, this is a result to be proud of: our short-notice campaign came within a whisker of taking the seat, and we've proved that the Greens really can be in contention anywhere. Well done to Ed Burnham for being a fantastic candidate!
We'll get it next time.
Southmead (Bristol) by-election result:

It's mid November and I just spent most of today outdoors in a t-shirt because it was so warm. This weather is not normal and is a worrying sign of just how much damage has already been done to the climate.
Proud to announce I am standing for the role of

Activist Training & Political Education Officer! I want to build on the YG's amazing record so far to help take us to the next level of political activism.
Thank you

Bristol only results from Avon and Somerset PCC election:
Labour - 41% (+7)
Green - 33% (+5)
Conservative - 17% (-4)
Lib Dem - 9% (-1)
Interesting for council elections later (but PCC elections now under FPTP, so Greens+LDs may have been squeezed). Should be close
Not a single councillor has worked harder than Yassin in the last 3 years. I look forward to him being reelected along with
@ShonaJemphrey
so Lawrence Hill will finally have all of the representation it deserves!
Final canvassing session of the year talking to the residents in Lawrence Hill. The cost of living-crisis, housing crisis, repairs, knife crime, dentists and the NHS were the top issues on residents minds!
Too many left-wing people are happy to abandon the principle of self-determination if it clashes with an overly reductive "West Bad" worldview.
Self-determination through the democratic process is sacrosanct, be it for Scotland, the Falklands, Ukraine, Taiwan, or any other place.
The critique dismisses the Falkland Islanders' overwhelming vote (99.8%) to remain a British Overseas Territory in 2013. It's crucial to remember that the principle of self-determination holds, whether we're discussing the Falklands or Scotland.

, given that the direct links to London section is the area which has already had a lot of work done on it, so the future work is almost entirely investment in the Midland and North?
If you identify more with *the literal Taliban* than with someone saying trans people maybe shouldn't be demonised, maybe it's time you should reconsider your position?

Brilliant to be out today for the Bristol Green Party action weekend to elect Carla Denyer! We had a great reception on the doorstep, and a very delicious lunch. Obligatory Green Party living room bicycles included 🚲
