#OTD in 1946: A TWA Constellation [NC86513] in a training flight crashes in Pennsylvania (US), 5 of 6 aboard die. Crew lost control due to electrical fire in baggage compartment later traced to maintenance issues. Type was grounded pending installation of fire detecting sensors.

#OTD in 1945: a South African AF C-47 [Registration ”6812”] crashes off Kisumu (Kenya). All 28 aboard die. Accident occurred shortly after take-off at night, while in initial climb. Based on available evidence, authorities could not determine the accident cause.

#OTD in 1944: a USAAF A-26 [43-22253] crashes in a trailer Park in Maine (US). 21 die, worst air disaster in Maine history. Coincidentally on the same day a USAAF B-17 [44-38023] also crashes in the same State, killing 10 in what is the second-worst air disaster in Maine history.

🧵1/4 #OTD in 2000: Hapag-Lloyd Flight 3378, an A310, crash lands in Vienna (Austria), all 151 aboard survive. A landing gear malfunction prevented its retraction. Due to other factors (crew actions, aircraft FMS and others) jet ran out fuel, which led to incident.

#OTD in 1969: a Royal Nepal Airlines DC-3 [9N-AAP] crashes in Hetauda (Nepal). All 35 aboard die. Cruising in bad weather, plane struck a hill at 7300 ft and went down in the Sambri River. Inquiry pointed to a CFIT, due to low clouds, crew were unable to distinguish the ridge.

#OTD in 1960: a CSA Flight 511, an IL-18 [OK-OAD] crashes in Nuremberg (W. Germany) all 52 aboard die. Plane broke apart in mid-air. Enquiry stated that for undetermined reasons aircraft made a descent which exceeded structural limits, likely due to mechanical issue or emergency.
