@baym Yet to meet a VC who supports blue sky basic research in Biology. One reason Bell Labs was successful because they supported extra-academic blue sky research.

When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure Worth the read especially in the context of another startup billing itself to be bell labs of today Bell labs products made no money for its parent company Bell labs members had nobody telling them implicitly or

What are the best examples in biotech of awesome technology or engineering that was a flop commercially? Examples that were technologically very impressive and cutting-edge but failed commercially because they didn’t actually solve a real need or maybe even got leap-frogged by
The last new FDA drug approval for 2024 is not a drug and is f*cking awesome. Humacyte just got their SYMVESS 'fake' arteries approved for use as an implant to replace/bypass blood vessels damaged in the limbs from trauma. SYMVESS has been used in car accidents, gunshot wounds,

It has been over five years since DNA foundation models took their perch atop the pantheon of polarizing biology topics. I’ve been waiting. Watching. Eager to see the first set of models pre-trained on or fine-tuned with cutting-edge sequencing data instead of the shotgun reads

How good is big pharma at constantly trawling EHR and claims data to find new indications for their existing drugs? Is this something they’re constantly doing, or only do ad hoc when they have a hypothesis that a drug might be useful in a new indication? Feels like a good AI
Apparently, the connection between GLP-1 and AD is not so far fetched. Cleveland Clinic did a real-world observation study and found that patients who initiated GLP-1s had 31% lower risk of developing AD. SGLT2i had 33% reduction. DPP4i was the control. https://t.co/xWOyJTWNkk

This would be very interesting. What if the reason $NVO bid so much for $MTSR isn't about obesity (it's amycretin should rival any GLP-1/GIP in terms of weight loss) But rather, it thinks a monthly GLP-1 injection is better for AD patients.

This hand-drawn graph tracks the battle casualties of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division from its entry into combat in August 1944 through to March 1945. It breaks losses into three categories: killed (red), wounded (blue), and missing (grey), with a cumulative line showing total

He recibido un mensaje de un antiguo alumno de máster al que di clase y dirigí el TFM. Me cuenta que ha conseguido trabajo como bioinformático y me da las gracias por lo aprendido. No hay mejor regalo que eso. Qué suerte la mía ! Gracias🍀💚

@19joho Because Pazdur is a highly experienced drug regulator, universally respected. He will bring stability and a long track record of leadership excellence to the FDA CDER director job.

Rick Pazdur moving over to take the reins of CDER is a VERY BIG DEAL for the FDA. It may also be the trigger for more change.

I wonder if the United States can learn anything from the last time a major industrialized country decided to isolate itself from the rest of the world? Almost a decade after the Brexit vote, GDP in the UK is 6-8% lower relative to peer countries. (More: https://t.co/zHGpWi5l7r)

Not everyone knows that a way to add DNA to a plant seed is with a "gene gun." It literally blasts the gene into the seed. I like the one from Bio-Rad because they made it pistol-shaped. (there is a helium tank for pressure and quite a bit other stuff you dont see)
Never thought I would own an appreciable science asset, but when this first came out I got it for $4K and now its well over $13K+tariff. This extremely niche industry MUST be disrupted; there are only TWO players in this market. Please someone make a cheap affordable biolistic!
